The Motorola's we used during the Smoky Mountain Cruise worked very well. Distance and clarity were excellent. I agree that the commercial grade radios are the way to go and if other channels are needed in the future they can be added/programmed.
Great information and conversation on this very important item that will improve the safety of our cruises!

I’ve used UHF and VHF Motorola radios all over the planet for years and these radios are more of a commercial quality thus the price. Programming is easy and can be done by the user to any publicly available frequency. We program ours here with no problems. I’ll ask the systems / IT geek.. ahhem, guy today and get some details on how easy it is.
For sure any communication company that Carrys Motorola can do it in minutes at a pretty low cost.
“ There’s an app for that” so no worries. 😂

A follow up:
My IT geek onboard has the Motorola software to program the radios here. Says it’s available through the Motorola dealer at time of purchase. Plus it seems to be available to download from plenty of sources

when at the Edmonton cruise I spoke to the Camaro guy who has radios and lets others use them,
not trying ot quote or misquote him but I was left with the general impression that he may be ordering radios for their cruises from perhaps overseas at about 50 bucks apiece,
that being said my thoughts are for the Edmonton lets cruise I will order 1 or 2 and this current thread will be separate,

so I may start the ball rolling by buying a set of the motorolas, any body else so we can get a set going forward that works in almost all areas,

thoughts again for those who will be wanting to use something Jeff

Paul and myself chatted one night with the walkie talkie app I found..... it was amazing clear ( Paul in Red Deer and me in Edm )

Now, every 3-5 minutes a advertisement popped up... but for $7.99 for one month you can lose the pop ups.

I told Paul that if on the Bowling Green event someone is stuck in the washroom at a gas stop ( had mexican food the night before ) ..... he still can radio on the app if he is 20 km or so behind... but not that far on a two way radio probably.

He said we have a year to test.... something to look into

I said a radio everyone has to have that and also a phone.... but this app saves having 2 things and charging them both.

Mark me down for 2 Jeff. Let me know how much and I’ll send it over. 😀

Brian’s WalkieTalkie app is pretty cool..I think as long as we have cell service. Likely 99% of the time I would be all we need.

The Motorola’s will be great for the RZR and sled trips in BC where there is 100% no service.

Derek has a very good point. Back from Meet in the Middle through the USA had mobile dead zones that were to our detriment. Our simple group of four split into two groups of two. One group went ahead and the ones behind were searching for them. Then our two cars got into a 10km construction zone with no way to communicate between each other as there was no cellular service. Going to the Sun Road was awesome ... again no way to communicate between the rocks ... a high powered (5W) system would have likely resolved our situation.

@Jeffer2013 - Jeffy, I am confused on whether you are obtaining the sets from the fella here in Calgary (who has short term rentals when we need them) or the $50 “Overseas(?)” resource which might be that other non-Motorola brand (I don’t know). Do you know the brand obtained by the Camaro Friends?

I do appreciate Brian’s recommended option for when mobility service is never in question. Some of the 2019 Caravan Participants may not have a great USA data roaming provider and/or cost them dearly to try and get a plan add-on. Again our simple group of 4 cars did not have great cell phone access between each other due, in part, to having (not having) varied provider data plans.

I am in on the Bowling Green meet up for 2019 with the GTA group.
Would be great to meet up with you guys again.
Maybe a radio would help facilitate that. Let me know when this comes to a decision on the brand & model.
Tentative itinerary for BG next year is for me to hop on the wagon someplace in Toronto then down to Cleveland with a visit to the R&R museum (been there, done that already). Next is off to Indianapolis speedway. Apparently they have lucked out and reserved some time to drive the speed way in our cars if we are so inclined. They told me it was $35 for the privilege. This is with a guide car out front so those Ron Fellow's skills would probably not be tested Derek.
Then we are staying at the Drury Inn right in BG. Something like $200 per night but that is with breakfast & dinner plus a very rare open bar other than taxes on the booze. Actually very inexpensive if you if you are couple and cost in the breakfast, dinner and a few beers (prefer Rum & Coke myself).
I'll be running solo again.
Please keep me advised on the radio.

A little addition to the above.
The GTA group had blocked a few rooms at the Drury Inn but the GTA group had quite a few cancellations within their BG group. Probably the Trump factor! So those blocked rooms are on the market now. If you do not have a room down there this might be something of interest to you. Been told it is approx. 10 miles from the museum.

Yes, Paul and I mentioned some of the mountain cruise has no cell service. Come on providers..... the transcanada doesnt have service between Golden and Revolstoke I think... and Jasper to LL too.... most main highways should have service by now...get with the times..... people need to text and post on Facebook while on holidays.... haha.

Paul also said have to monitor data for using in the USA.

Jeffs wife said she will try these with other ladies for her crafting stuff.

Does anyone have the most expensive store ones ...two way radios? $150 a pair ones..... is the range better? I got mine new sealed for $40 at a pawn shop.... only work about 5-7 car range.

This is a pretty good radio, and my second purchase of the same model number . It seems to work just under a mile at MURS and over a mile at GMRS in a city environment. This is where a "40 mile FRS" radio actually gets a half mile. This is far better than the 6 or so high end FRS/GMRS radio I have tried, and at 2 meters it is powerful enough to hit a local repeater

I stepped up and purchased mid-higher priced Uniden 2-way for the 2017 Drumheller Cruise and have since found out on the 2018 Going-to-the-Sun & the 2018 Mountain Cruise experiences that when testing 4 methods, nothing beat the 5W Motorola commercial system that we were blessed to test (thank you Jeff for setting it up) (thank you Don - the supplier). My Uniden 2-ways are apparently 2W but said to broadcast at about 0.9W ... whatever ... failed in comparison.

(the 4 methods I tested on these two trips were 5W Motorola, 2W retail 2-way, Bell USA roaming with iPhoneX, Apple Car Play (mobile dependent). I do like the Motorola choice.
