Hi, In Edmonton there is a new hand held photo laser gun ( photo radar is Ka I think ) that takes speed pictures by a officer / bylaw? and they mail you a ticket..... I already got on on the Henday here.

They sit in a City Of Edmonton Toyota Prius car on the Quesnell bridge.

Now, I was close to Banff on the way back from Kelowna and i see an oncoming truck flash his brights ( oncoming driver -- thanks for flashing at me ) as I come under one of those animal bridges. I think it was a grey Yukon sitting on the back side of the bridge with the window down.

All they do is get your speed and snap the picture... no pulling you over.

Now, i slowed down when I seen the truck flashing and I might be OK... but people flew by me one by one like it was the Autobahn and they could be snapping 50-100 tickets an hour.

Watch as you come to a bridge and see if a truck is parked on top or behind it.... you won't even know it happened.... and my Passport 9500ix did not go off.

Now, if you see the truck you should be able to slow down as they might have to wait till your farther away for a straight line of sight.

I think this one in Banff was this photo laser but traffic was too heavy to try look back at the truck. No flash bulb mounted on the truck either.

i tried checking radar forums a few weeks back to see if this laser is a new band/beam... not had time recently to check but guys with laser jammers are not jamming this laser or catching the beam for warning.

Watch out.

Brian

Looks like nothing will jam that laser as of the end of that thread. If you are speeding, well, it's just part of the game I guess. The scary thing that was mentioned is if you are just going the speed of traffic and it starts pegging everyone that is going over the limit. That's just not right.

the idea of catching a speeder is to slow him/her down as they are perceived to be a danger to other drivers around him, this way of ticketing is no more than just another government tax grab.

I just got my picture in the mail, 2nd time with the Sentra coming into or out of Whitecourt Alberta. If you get stopped by the police you immediately change your driving habit, at least at that time I'd think. Getting a ticket a week later in the mail means that you've been driving using the same habits for a week since the photo radar picture was taken. I mean I accept that I was speeding (85 in a 70 zone) but they seem to like to set up by transition zones so that if you are late in slowing down or fast in speeding up you get a ticket rather than purely being a speeder and exceeding the posted limit for a longer duration on the highway for example.............so I agree with vt65 totally!

Far as I know this type of "enforcement" is not allowed outside of municipalities aka not on highways. Maybe the Parks have a different law? And the van on the Quesnel? I'll keep an eye out for that, thanks.

I have a Passport 9500 and an Escort both with multi band, front, rear and sides and got nailed on the QE2 with complete silence from either detector on two different occasions. Funny how the one in the passenger seat works after the fact.:)
This was a ticket hand written and autographed. Not a photo.
No one to blame but me in the end!

Here in Calgary , on the Deerfoot South anyway, they like to have a person on the overpass pointing north say, they zap you with the laser, but they have cars parked up on the southbound on ramps and they’re the ones that chase you down and give you a ticket, also seen it on the overpass for Heritage Point on highway 2 south .... by the time you see the cop on top of the bridge the car is already heading for you!!!

Here you just get the ticket in the mail. :(

I have thought of facing a dash camera up angle a bit in my rear window feeding it to a small monitor to watch and see them faster.

It’s all about the fines!! If they catch ya doing it, then ya tend to drive more “reasonable” when they mail it to ya .....

Lake Louise and Sunshine Village have some excellent skiing. I sure miss those days. Funny thing though. Every time we skied at Sunshine,it was either gloomy skies or all out snowing. As a joke we’d refer to it as “scumshine village”.

I think every day we skied last year we had very low visibility, It's still better than skiing in Ontario, only hills here.
