Federal Election 2021

Here in NL, we have one seat gone blue and two others that almost went blue. One of those two, the PPC helped turn it red by splitting the vote on the right. The conservative proportion of the vote is rising, albeit slowly. The blue seat count doubled in Atlantic Canada, baby steps.
 
I'll posit a little bit of a different take on this waste of our time and money.
Canadians do not trust either JT or O'T to run the country single handedly. Probably just as well since both seem to quite capable of trying to outdo each other in ways to spend tax dollars. OOP! Borrowed money.
Would be nice if they could recognize that and instead of trying to show us how bad the other guy is, try and administer the country in such a way that it benefits all. Maybe they need to go bad to school to learn what government is all about.

The populace is now conditioned to expect and occasionally receive hand outs and goodies. You would never win in an area like the Greater Toronto Area by not offering the "goody" bag of stuff we cannot afford.

I look down the rabbit hole and frankly do not see a "conservative" government ever again in Canada. The present Prime Minister is a thug and yet the voters accepted both he and his marxist pals with the glow of Christmas Morning.

Obviously we vote in our own riding. However, just as in other places, the so called leader of the party is who sets the tone and policies that are then mouthed by the local MP. So a charismatic leader, all other things being equal, irrespective of the party has more chance of his party winning overall. In theory we should all go to listen to what each party's representative has to say in our own district and then decide who to vote for based on our perception of their values in accordance with our own. In theory a much better way to vote. How many of us will go listen to each party's representative in our own riding (11 in mine)? I would venture not many if any at all.
Now as to labeling parties outright Marxist or Socialist or Fascist or Capitalist even, that is a bit of a stretch. Maybe some would prefer an autocratic ruler such as in Iran, Afghanistan and any number of other countries worldwide. They will rule by the rule of law making sure that the "proper" judges get nominated and the "proper" bureaucracy in in place and obviously the "proper" police force. It can happen quite easily in the span of a few years. That is what happened in Germany almost a century ago and, some would argue, was/is a work in progress very near to us.
If someone doesn't like "socialism" then let them stand up and proclaim they want to do away with CPP. EI. Medicare, welfare and any number of other "socialistic" programs. Was it not Tommy Douglas who came out of SK with this blatantly socialist, Medicare, program? Get up there and say so!
Capitalism is the best we have so far as I can see. It is not the be all and end all though and will always be a work in progress. The pursuit of the almighty dollar is not really an admirable objective if you can not use it to help, charities, those around you.
So, rather work to improve what we have than to belittle ideas that pop up every now and then. They should be welcomed and explored and then if not suitable cast aside. But at least take the time to listen to them.

Don't know about the thug" part Black. Seems to be I can remember something about a former PM getting brown envelopes as well. Jsut might be a common trait unfortunately.
I'll agree with the "goody" bag concept though, as I have previously stated. You got a problem? Here's a million, or two or why not several. Trouble is that they are all doing it. Wonder if the C's are trying to keep up with the L's?
Would be nice to have a government in there that would actually administer our tax dollars rather than just find ways to throw it out the window at whatever grabs their attention.
Remember Paull Martin clamping down as finance minister under the Chretien government clamping down on the spending. That raised hell with the provinces.
 
Been to autocratic countries (and countries that were worse) and our system of government, no matter how much it p!sses me off sometimes, is much preferred. We can strongly oppose our own government as we have seen in the recent election without any fear of mass arrests or shootings. And if you are going to point out the few arrests we did have, look into it closer and you will see that there were reasons for those arrests. We generally have two problems in Canada right now. A general feeling of entitlement among the population that demands the government to spend, spend, spend. An awful lot of special interest groups have popped up that feed off this and encourage it. The second major problem is we have a political class that are more interested in their own well-being than the country's. Their only wish is to satisfy the demanding public (who are egged on by the special interest groups) and thus get re-elected and continued their feeding at the trough. To solve one, you have to solve the other. None of the leaders we have are capable of this.
 
My wife moderates a 'meet the party choices ' each election (other than this covid cancelled year) at our local library. It is not a venue for people to interact with them other than we can present questions ahead of time and they have 30 seconds each to address the question. ok... seldom are the questions actually addressed but whatever...I go every time to just sit and listen to what each have to say. Whatever their good intentions may have been when they entered politics has long been stripped from them and I agree with previous comments. They are where they are for themselves. A paycheck and a healthy pension.
 
As an economic migrant that spent a fair amount of time in Eastern & Western Europe during Communist and post-Communist times I can echo that Canada is definitely very far from making Karl Marx proud and attaining Socialist and Communist ideologies and autocratic rule so it's pretty amusing to see these terms being thrown loosely around by people who definitely have not experienced this first hand.

Countries may have 'socialist' sounding party names, some policies and norms and maybe socialist instruments (US owns USPS, France owns the railways, China owns some production) but that's as far socialist as things get in simple terms. Now autocracies, plenty of those around the world, Canada is very far from that and no we're not slipping into autocratic rule.

The majority parties in Canada are overall pretty centrist comparatively speaking in my opinion. They all tread on each others' toes on many issues (traditionally labelled left or right).

Now those that think the Liberals have a stranglehold on politics I want to remind you that you are still talking about a minority Government that had a shaky and misjudged re-election which gained them absolutely nothing politically and will likely hurt them in the future. It was not a rejection but definitely a slap in the proverbial face. Governments have changed in the past and will change again in the future - there's no doubt about this.

Political theory and naming conventions aside I definitely agree that there's deep distrust and malaise that has been sewn into politics and that will need to be addressed. Also remember social fabric and spectrum is changing, we're getting older and better looking, new generation that you and I may not agree with is mobilizing. At least I hope they are.
