Confession is good for the soul so here is mine.........

LSXtasy,

It is never pathetic. We all have our own pace. I know runners who have been at it for decades and they still run a 7:30 pace per km. Just the way they're built. Some people out of the box can be regularly hitting a pace of 4:30 per km. Training will only take you so far. Some are built to run and some are not.

My goal is that while I accept that I'll never finish first in a race, I've never come in last either. But I'm going to be guy who has the most fun doing it............

I winder, what kind of footwear do you use for a mudder? Its gotta be terribly hard on on shoes.

I'm jealous that you can run on a TM. Not a skill I've ever been able been able to master myself. I think it is because my pace varies so much and a TM requires you to hold a steady pace.

Cheers,

Garry

Thanks. That's very true how everyone's pace is different. I just hate failing at anything or looking foolish. I've been looking around at different tyoes of footwear, and I'm thinking that some sort of trail runner would be best. I really like Saucony. I've had good luck with them. I've always wanted to try Asics as I know they are a lot of people's favourite. That being said I just picked up a pair of Nike's that are really comfortable, and I'm liking them so far for running, but not for weight training. They put too much stress on the front on my knees because of the angle of the shoes. So I've been switching betwen the Nike's and my Saucony's. I like the treadmill but it's not the end all be all. Just allows me to train at home when the weather's crappy or the gym's packed.
Keep up the good work. I look forward to hearing your progress.

I just finished a new PB ( personal best) of running 4 miles in 42:47 minutes. That time includes a 4 minute warm up and doesn't include my cool down. It was on my personal treadmill and the incline was only 0.5, and I was running at a speed of 6mph. This is pathetic for an avid runner, but I'm pumped that I'm headed in the right direction for Tough Mudder.

Completing a run with a personal best is awesome! Nice job!!!!

I officially started my year long training program and my hammies are sore and this is the easy part! Well, I have 18 weeks to go before hitting the next intensity level so I'm optimistic. I'm using sketchers so far. I find them quite comfortable. I think the most difficult part will be keeping a good diet and I understand this is the critical part of getting the results I want.

That's great Riley. Don't think of it as a "diet", as that implies that there is an ending. Think of it as a lifestyle change. I'm a firm believer in a "cheat" day. Work hard all week and set aside a day when you can have a meal that you have been craving. It really helps. Making small changes in your foods is another way to prevent going off the deep end. Say for example you eat white bread (which offers very little nuteient value, and your body recognizes as "sugar"), switch up to whole wheat, then multi grain, then some sort of rye bread. Eating healthier is more expensive (which is stupid) but it's worth more in the long term. Hang in there. It'll be worth it. Trust me.

Good morning LSXtasy,

4 km of running, in falling snow and through about 2" of snow, but the road is really icy under the snow and it is of course hard to see where the ice is an dis not. So I curbed my pace and instead enjoyed it more.

I think you're points to Riley are spot on. I had a huge sandwich issue, while bread, deli meats, mayo etc when I was obese. I would say it would not have even been unusual to have a half a loaf of bread as sandwiches in one sitting even.

Bread was one of the 1st things I cut out and still it is a rare thing in my life. Do I miss it, oh ya. But to be of proportional weight I don't even giev it a second thought.

I started with New Balance shoes but the shoe companies seem to change models on a yearly basis and the following year the "new improved" New Balance was not a comfortable shoe so I went to Asics now and have stayed with them for the past four years now. Just like for our cars, a good set of shoes is worth the investment, the feeling of confidence it gives and to have happy feet at the end of an exercise sesson.

I'm pretty well the same way. The TM gets used when the weather is just too miserable to want to be outside, due to wind mostly. Or if I want just a fast 15 minutes without having to get dressed (winter time like) before I can go outside. And for inclines I guess too as the land here is totally flat.

I had a goal of never running a 10km over 60 minutes otherwise it would be a feeling of total disappointment with myself. It did happen once but I ran the race even though I had a viscious cold. Some of my friends later told me they could track my progress by the trail of kleenexs and my constant honking through the forest (trail run). I shouldn't have done the run but as I had to drive an hour for it I thought I'd make the best of it. As for looking foolish bugger everyone else, especially with my slow, wide load ass swaying as I pass them! And my jiggling belly to boot! I'm doing what most people can't so if it is graceful or butt ugly I'm planning on being out there - and motivating others perhaps at the same time. Maybe if they see me out there doing it they'll think about particiapting as well.............remember we lead by example!

Cheers,

Garry

Garry, you hardcore runners kill me. Rain, shine or snow you guys are out there doing your thing. I'm a total fair weather "runner", I use that term lightly. That's good that you were just able to get out and get a run in. It's better then just thinking about running. Good stuff.

LSXtasy,

I was able to go out for another "quicky" in the mid afternoon. There was no wind and it warmed up to -15. So I went to the highway and logged in another 2.5 km but it felt so good again to do more. Yes, I will go in any weather but wind. In the winter anyway. Wind in the non-winter seasons I will push more but wind in the winter is a deal-breaker for me.

Every little bit helps for me. The fresh air is great, it gets me away from any food/snacking temptations too.

And unlike when I head out at 6:30 right now I don't have to be worried about getting hit in the darkness. I do wear a miner's light but you can never tell with some people and with the snow this morning and the whiteout you get encountering a semi on the highway it can be unsettling.

Yes, I've done too much talking in my life and not enough doing so I'm trying to make up for that now.

Cheers,

Garry

WOW, Garry I am impressed to say the least. I too am a fair weather runner stay inside on a warm dry treadmill in winter. But I do see runners out in the snow and rain and shake my head. Spring comes early here so I can wait.
LSX tasy, I am now registered in the 2013 May Tough Mudder , Looks like my training will have to step up as well, Thank God for Goodlife

Good morning,

Well today it's 208 and I'm feeling GREAT!

No running today and yesterday. TM walking days instead but walking speed bumped from 4 to 4.3 mph. I have a fan as well so I don't get too hot, a TV for watching movies although I don't find that helps too much. But a bit over 35 minutes is about the longest I can stand to be on the TM so I try to go on a couple of times a day, even 15 minutes for a mile does me good.

Only -15 yesterday but a 20 km wind from the north and as the road in front of me is a N-S one I have to face this on the way out or way back and it just sucks the life out of me to open the door and be facing that. Hopefully it ends soon. I miss running.......

Cheers,

Garry

I can't believe how well this is gone and wish I could help others struggling with weight issues to do the same.

Fantastic Garry! This is a lifestyle commitment and it's good to hear that you are embracing it. This may sound weird but I look at life like a line graph (much like a dyno sheet;)). We have a goal and as long as we're achieving it, then great. There's always going to be obstacles or dips in our life graph but as long as we focus and keep that drive we'll make it just fine. Good job, and keep it up.

Good afternoon LSXtasy,

Amen to that. Yes, it is about being unsatisified with one's life and about putting changes into place to get you where you want to be. It is not likely to be easy, but it is a test of how badly you want to change where you are. I was tired of both being overweight and not seeing any results from all the time I was putting in walking. Put in a plan, followed through and now as they say, living the dream.

Sure the periods where there is no weight loss are disappointing, I stayed at the same weight for 10 days I think and my gf for 9 days but then you hit a period where 3 or 4 pounds disappear in 3 days and you're back on top of your game.

I tried on some jeans from 5 years ago and they fit fine everywhere except my waist which gave me that most hated muffin look that I dislike so much. My weight should be good for them but maybe just the rapidity of the loss means that there is some tightening up yet to occur. But I'm patient and I'll let it keep taking its course.

Mom is down to 155 and my gf to 191 and everyone is just so overwhelmed with how well this is working for us.

Being constipated, some days brutally so, was a pain. But substituted All Bran and yoghurt for my pudding and protein powder snack and all seems well again. Man the things I will work into polite conversation! But then again I want to make sure anyone who was thinking about this knows there are odd challenges to deal with too, not just looking so much better than you were before!

Cheers,

Garry

I think I see the trend to your 3-4 pound rapid weight loss after not loosing weight for a few days.

I boil weight gain/loss to a very simple explanation. The only way to gain weight is what you put in your mouth, the only way to loss weight is by what comes out. I would find it interesting if everything you eat and drink was weighed before consuming it and everything was weighed that came out (don't ask me how, I don't have the first clue). This includes all the stuff when going to the bathroom as well as sweat and the moisture lost through respiration during the day. No matter what, it boils down to what ever goes in has to weigh less than what leaves.

Good morning Riley,

OK that weather does not sound good! A treadmill day for sure. Here is was not so bad, -16 and no wind but fresh snow and no or little vehicle tracks to pack it down. I tend to be a very low foot lift walker/runner so even 2 or 3" of snow results in real resistance for me. There is a little trench in the snow between my steps.

But on the plus side, while I didn't get a good distance of running in, I did my old course of 10 km my first since before surgery actually, 5.8 km or so that was run in 4 different segments. But I don't think I'll be repeating that tomorrow and may even have a lunchtime nap in my future as it really was tiring to do! I was worried about getting really thirsty but I tanked up before I left and right when I got back. I have a water bottle and carrier but in the winter it is often more a pain than a benefit.

While I don't weigh my food I keep a daily Post-it-note with everything I eat, calorie and protein content etc. while is very educational.

I think something similar to you. In a lot of cases it is input minus output. You take in energy and use energy during the day, the difference is then either stored as fat or consumed from stored fat. That is the challenge right now, to lose weight it requires 7 to 800 calories a day and that is not a lot! Consider 1 cup of 1% milk is 110 calories!! It is a pity we are such efficient machines. I hate being a hybrid and wish I was a mid-70's V8 instead.........

I've learned just what size a "portion" is and it ain't all that big I'm here to day.

But looking in the mirror, being able to run, fitting into clothes and feeling positive and happy about myself, there is no food in the world that could ever make up for that.

Good morning,

207...........

Finally came to the realization that I needed to get my expectations in line. Reviewing the previous 12 days data it resulted in a 4 lb loss which means that right now I am losing a pound every three days and that this will take even longer in the future.

I was starting to be a bit disappointed when there was no sign of loss every day. So now I'll be better prepared for what I ought to expect.

All Bran finally kicked in after almost a week. Mom just on the starting edge of this so I told her to start having some AB with yoghurt twice daily........

Walked this morning for 45 min and hope to go to Peace River to have a short run on the dike since it looks like there will be no wind today.

Cheers,

Garry

All this talk of All Bran makes me want to get some!:D

I've heard to lose a pound a week requires a 500 calorie deficit every day. Now, this doesn't sound like much as Garry's post states however, the catch is when you are over eating (man how I loved to over eat....and still want to!). Say you are 250 pounds and it takes only 2800 calories a day to maintain this (I'm guessing). You only have to reduce your food intake by 20% to lose weight. Not too bad. The think I struggle will is that I like my meals at the wrong end of the day and I was over eating by about 500-800 calories a day which means I now need to reduce my food intake by 1000-1200 calories a day to lose a pound a week. That you notice, that your stomach notices and that is what makes trying to lose weight so difficult. Not the simple reduction of 500 calories, but the 500 below the required amount you should be eating just to maintain weight.

PS, Garry, 207 is AWESOME! Keep it up! Even if it is slow. Great Job!

Good afternoon Riley,

Just returned from a short run along the dike. 10 degrees cooler there than at my place. But it was good and I have to admit I liked the look of my shadow. You don't always get to see yourself when you are not close to a mirror.

So you think that you were overeating by 500 to 800 calories a day? In the long term that is how we do it.

Sadly, right now, I am just eating 500 to 800 calories a day!!!! But I don't have to face the issue that you will, of feeling hungry. I eat because I know that I should be eating, not because my tummy is rumbling.

All Bran, my new best friend after this morning I can say......

I will be very happy to cross the 200 boarder, sort of the same way I'll be happy when the Z06 crosses the 200 boarder too!!!!!!!!!! I'll give myself a goal of mid-Feb and we'll see how I make out with that.

I get to load some grain in a few hours so I'm happy for both exercise and being out of the house and eliminated snacking opportunities........

Keep up with your program Riley and I can't wait to hear about results.

Cheers,

Garry

Some great determination displayed in this thread and I wish ya all the best .Personally I'm a diabetic as I see others are on this forum .I don't use insulin but i take meds that with a good diet works well for me .Couple thing I do is the eat vegan a couple meals a day and if I get a fair amount of exercise at work I can loose a half pound a day .I was never obese but loosing 15-20 lbs was my goal .I lost it over a year and kept it off and the doctor has actually told me not to loose much more as I'm now down 40 lbs .

Again ,lots of good determination here :D

Good afternoon Elf,

What a great long term success! I was never a diabetic but I was headed that way, being put on Metformin and all. I check my blood sugar level still ever once in a while and it is good.

I do miss my beef. Pork is something I have to be careful with, poultry and fish are good to go.

I've had friends lose feet etc. to having been a diabetic so it is also a motivator.

Exercise. You can't beat it for the good that it does for you. Even when was at 261 I still walked everyday for 90 plus minutes, if I wasn't going to lose weight I was still going to be as fit as I could. It is funny (sort of) to look back 5 plus years ago and see readings of 16 plus for my blood sugar and now 4.5 to 5. No food tastes that good, well maybe peanuts......and the beef.........and chocolate too!

But no doubt, I would not want that food to return in my life if it meant abusing my body like that again..........

Good luck!

Cheers,

Garry
