As a youngster I attended a few Gold cup races….Bay of Quinte near Kingston / Picton ….St Clair River near Sarnia and Detroit River near Windsor. Bob Hayward was a famous racer who died in a hydroplane crash. He was racing for Supertest Petroleum ( a London Ontario company) in Miss Supertest . Amazing speed in fragile boats in those days…no survival capsule or real safety features for the driver. Most were powered by surplus WW2 aircraft engines like Allison and Rolls Royce Merlin’s up to the switch to turbines around 1980 or thereabouts. As a London native Miss Supertest was a big deal to me and won about 4 Gold Cup championships.
