Snow is Coming

Good God Greg -- You deserve a medal.

Can you hear the kids coming down the street to play on those banks? :D

I'm more concerned with seeing the traffic coming down the street! Hence the need to back the vehicles in now. I'm waiting in the parking lot of my wife's work right now to pick her up; still storming here. I think it's gotten worse in the last hour. It took me over an hour to blow out the lane this morning. We've been really hit hard this winter...I might have to track down that rodent Willie as I think he's full of crap! Calling for freezing rain here on Monday now! Wonderful!

I might be able to give our good friend in Owen Sound a run for his money as we have snow coming out of our ying yang up here in Midland! At the moment, the wind is blowing about 60 km/hr and you can't see 50 feet in front of from where I am standing in my garage. We have similar snow banks, maybe even bigger than what is in Owen Sound. I will try and get a pic.

Nice to know I'm not alone navion. My wife's mom lives in Penetang; I can vouch for the severity of their winters! By the way, the snowblower I have is 19 years old and has been through many bad years for snowfall; the old blower has never let me down yet. It still has the original belts on it! I bought it at Sears all those years ago. 10hp with a 29" swath. Money well spent!

This is not meant to tell anyone how to drive in the snow. Having driven and owned taxis for thirty years, there is a little Ontario trick that I did every year when it snowed just a little more than just lightly. Just by letting five lbs. of air out of all or at least the driving wheels has let me get up many hills where cars were stuck and spinning their tires. Also the softer tires greatly improve stopping distances.

We now reside in a penthouse condominium so no more shovelling for me thank heavens. I do enjoy watching everyone else working at it though.

That's nothing..........our snow clearer is over 60 years.
Comes with his own shovel too !!

We have 14 plus inches to date, and I'm having trouble keeping the
driveway clear. Too much snow and wind.

Tony,
welland

My 60+ y/o snow shoveler has 2 shovels -- one in each hand -- and a broom sticking out the back. :D

Don't overdue it mate. It's going to be above freezing Monday and rain.

Ok, here is when you get frustrated with a smile. My neighbor came out 5 minutes after I started to use my snow blower and then he was trying to get his going (he has never started his once this year and I am sure he didn't treat the fuel in the spring) and sure enough he calls me over. Says he couldn't get his going. I went over, tried a few times and could tell his fuel line was plugged. I thought I would be a good neighbor and ask if he would like to borrow mine. I said to take it easy even though I have a large machine it was heavy snow and he hasn't cleared his driveway the last few days. Sure enough 20 minutes later get a knock on the door, he says there is something wrong with the machine, the drive handle is just hanging. I went over to see and noticed the belt was broken. The unit was being forced into heavy snow at high speeds. Of course I smile, said no problem and dragged it home. Wife looked at me when I went inside and of course said "I told you so" damn, I hate when she says that especially when she is right.

Well, until I can take it apart and replace the belt, I am back to using my shovel! It's great to have such good neighbors!

Idiots like that deserve the word "NO" and in no uncertain terms and a bill for the repairs. I've found that everyone that I have tried to help around here immediately take it as a given that I am at their beckoned call. Loan them one tool and your whole shop is their CTC. You can be sure they won't be digging into their wallet when your stuff breaks or just plain wears out. Neighbours who are healthy and with healthy, strong kids don't need my snow blower. Those who can afford a Caribbean holiday don't need my snow blower. Don't get me wrong, I still help people but take a long look and assess the situation first before offering. Usually, it's the ones who really need the help who won't ask. When I blow snow, there is one neighbour who will bring his shovel to the end of his driveway and do the greatest struggling act at trying to move ALL that snow all the while looking in my direction. I learned my lesson with him too the hard way and once bitten twice shy. He has a son half my age and bigger than me, who is capable of doing the job just fine.

Keith you couldn't have said it better. I have another fantastic neighbor that has some pretty serious health problems however is so proud he hates to ask anybody for help. You offer assistance because you know he truly does appreciate it.

I learned my lesson the hard way, like many others ...

Lend out any piece of motorized equipment , and you'll be repairing it constantly at you own expense .

The snowblower I cleaned my driveway with today, is 27 years old .. Nobody has ever touched it but me !

Our eastern friends please take care during this major storm.
Words from a wise man: "Better they be mad than you be mad". (my dad)
I usually can make time to help others out but I very seldom lend my stuff out.....this includes even my kids.

LOL, true, SB -- thanks for the well wishes. We've actually got it pretty good here -- nothing like what's going on in easter US. Some places over there are talking 30" (75cm) of snow with sustained high winds......ouch.

We'll all be glad when this is over tho......

Come on spring.

i have a policy to never loan anything with a motor on it. most of my neighbours are seasonal and view me as some sort of caretaker/go-to guy. when i bought my little backhoe i let it be known that - sure i can dig out a stump, move a rock etc. - for $50 an hour. the old saying goes - never loan your wife or your chain saw - they'll both come back f........ !!!
