my 71 build thread

Great thread. As a fellow 71 owner I am loving your pictures. Since you are a mechanic I would like to ask one question. I am having trouble with the tail lights on the passenger side. They are not working. Driver side tail light and signal lights are ok. I tried changing bulbs but that is not it. Any thoughts ?

First thing that pops in my head is a bad ground some where. have a look at the wiring back there. There are a couple of ground wires that go to the frame there. It wont hurt to take those wires off, clean up the frame and connector then reattach.
If you have access to a test light see if you have power back there at all. If not probe the wire as far as you can go till you find power. if your wiring is original like mine you will find all kinds of dry and cracked wiring.
Good luck man. I hope that helps.

Great work on the car so far Hezzy! I'm really enjoying this thread and as for the welding? Looks good. If it down't leak, fits well, and they don't fall off, I then say it's perfect. Anyone who disagrees can reweld them for you. :D

LOL. Thanks Riley. Yea functionality is key here. Ive never been steady enough to make the "roll of dimes welds" but I get it done. and fill in the burn holes I make.

So since it gave us ANOTHER!!! 3 cm of that white slop last night:(
Ive been making plans for another mod I want to do.
The LT-1 car apparently never had an overflow bottle for coolant.
I want to put an overflow in but Ive mounted my fan controller to the spot where the stock one would have went.

So my "rat rod style" solution is to put this in to catch overflow.

Some of you know what this is.

its an army water canteen. its aluminum and has some interesting patina on it. I still took some metal polish to it and I have to decide how to run the hose off the filler neck to it. and also I have to mount it some where.

I need some input.
There are a couple of spots ive been looking at on the inner fender to mount it.
one is right above the fan controller and relays.
The other is just between the rad and upper control arm.

What do you guys think?

Have a great day all...
Dave

After being an electrician for many years I can safely tell you water and electricity don't mix. I think as close to the rad as you can would be best. Also make sure the hose to it goes right to the bottom of the canteen so it can draw the coolant back, cooling down.
Cheers Rob

And, I'm sure you know this as well, but others doing this may not. Cut the hose that touches the bottom of the canteen at a 45 degree angle so it doesn't block fluid from entering back into the rad.

I think the close to rad position would be best....in my opinion.

there we go. finally!!!
works great. BIG smiles today
Thanks Don
the header flanges are no more than 2 3/4" off the ground. at best. lol
heard them scrape lightly once. Ill have to be careful.

After we bled the clutch it operated so nicely I said the hell with it. put the tires on and pumped them up. and took it around the block. Then took the boy for a spin around your area, all with no licence plate. lol
just a blast. feels good to know I can be at the meet and greet with it under its own power.
Brakes need to be bled now. very soft. easy to do though..

:driving:

I bet that felt great. Haven't had mine out yet. Roads are still a mess after that lat blast of winter. We need some good rains.

The hydraulic clutch...
I had doubts it would work at all.

in the end it cost me about $250 +- to gather all the pieces.
Hydraulic release bearing w\lines 170
mid 80s chev half ton master cylinder 35
reservoir 16
AN 4 to M12 adapter 6

easier than I thought and is so smooth.

have a great day everyone. Happy easter..
Dave

Great thread, and wicked ride Hezzy. Loved the rat rod solution with the canteen! I would love to see the car so,Erie, and if yr shoulder is still buggered up, I could twist wrenches for you.

Did you buy the motor off a guy named Corey or chad by any chance?

I got it from a guy named Wade actually.
Yea my shoulder is buggered all right. Now waiting to hear about when I will have surgery.

I will be starting a course at RDC on Monday so hopefully it wont be bugging me so much.
