I know my engine is shot.

New distributor shipped out of Memphis last night. It's coming USPS so it may take a week...or two.

Well, it finally cleared customs I see. USPS has to be the absolutely slowest method of shipping anything to Canada. Hopefully it will be here early next week. This thing was mailed on July 30th! 5 days to go from Memphis to Miami (yes, Miami) and then 4 more days to go from Miami to wherever it cleared customs. I don't blame the vendor. I once had a guitar amplifier mailed from Wisconsin that took over two weeks.

I think we had a courier bashing thread around here somewhere! I like USPS because they don't rape you with "duty" fees like UPS and nearly every time I get something shipped by UPS, it goes through Winnipeg...scratch that, it stops in Winnipeg because it gets "lost" (had this happen three times now).

Hopefully the new distributor will fix your car all up for you!

LOL from Miami it goes overseas.

If it's any consolation UPS isn't much better sometimes. I had a parcel held up from Corvette Central lately -- Must be the terror threat from Al Qaeda.

I hope they're as flippin' dilligent when I fly west in 2 weeks.

I bet you're anxious to find out if that cures your noise issue. Good luck mon ami.

I had the cap off the old distributor today. I put some pretty stiff advance springs in trying to hold the advance back so I can drive it a bit this weekend. It helped to keep the knock at bay. The distributor is definitely worn out; I can lift up and down and turn the center where the advance is quite a bit; probably a good 5 or 6 degrees. I'm pretty sure I'm on the right track.

I'll bet you are relieved.:D -- A teardown or new engine would definitely be at least untimely and no fun at all, and very expensive.

Continued good luck just in case you need it.

that's a long time greg, who did you buy it from ? i find performanceparts.com to be very good.

I ordered one from Steve Davis at Performance Distributors in Memphis. They curve it for you based on cam specs, compression, vehicle weight, etc. Very good reputation. If you change cams or heads you call them with your new specs and they tell you if you need a recurve. They've been in business for 40 years. Time to change this thread title to "I know my engine is shot"

This is how we finished the last ten miles to home from Sandfest today:

Noticed a more concerning knocking as we were pulling in to park at Sandfest. Figured we may as well enjoy the day and baby the car home. Decided to take the slower back roads home. About ten miles out of town the engine made a hell of a dying knock and squeal and quit before I could even get it shut off. Called CAA and they sent a fantastic operator within 25 minutes. He delivered the car right into my garage. And that is where it will sit for the foreseeable future. The upside is we had a great day today.

Oh man -- that sounds serious......sorry to hear that bro.

Looks like rebuild time and no vette for a while.

Greg..that's sad news..sorry to hear that.
I was hoping it was just a timing issue.
Get that engine out and onto a stand and with a little forensic dismantling you can decide the future...rebuild or replace?
I did the ZZ4 crate install years ago and it brought the fun back into my car.
good luck ..

Holy crap! That sucks!!!! I really thought and hoped it was the distributor. Keep us posted on the diagnosis.

I sure am sorry to hear about this Greg. Like the others, I had hope for your situation. Now just take a deep breathe, and get into that puppy. Next year will be better.

that stinks greg :( !!! personally i wouldn't waste my time on a dead l48 though. might be time to look into a 383 long block and swap over your l48 bolt ons. if you take the crate engine route mcmaster pontiac in orangeville is with the gmpp program and has good pricing. i would recommend a roller cam to get away from the zddp issues. sorry to hear the news, soldier on brother.

Thanks guys. Although this year is finished, it's the start of a new begining for the car. It's going to take some time to save some funds; still finishing the renovations at home and that comes first. The car is just a hobby. It'll be better than new when I get done with it. :)

great attitude greg !!! it's not a life changing crisis or anything :seeya:

Thanks for the dealer tip Doug. I'm definitely going with a roller cam for the reasons you stated. I want to get the apperance of the engine back to original which means getting rid of the high rise intake so I can put the original cowl induction air cleaner back on. I was watching the guages all the way home and temp was running about 190, oil pressure was a bit low at about 38. Nothing came through the block but it sure locked up quick.

Really sad to see that Greg but I changed the title for you. You're handling it very well -- Hope to see you sometime this summer..probably at a show.

Cheers
Colin.

It would be nice to see your new Vette when you get back. Let's try and do that with all the other Mudders.

Tried turning the engine over today just to see if it had seized. The good news is it's not seized. The bad news is it won't start.
