Good evening Riley, Colin,

My clothes that are too big fo rme go to Value Village. Oddly enough it is also the place where I pick up a lot of my running apparel, I've found Running Room and MEC stuff on the racks there. And I don't know why, but I know women's underclothes they take, men's I'm assuming they do as well. Some of my underwear have never even been worn yet and they're on their way out of the house. Crappy memories with my undies, I actually like them as they are bikini style and I sort of understand why women get into this sort of stuff. It makes me feel, well, more alluring when I wear them......butter than saying they make me feel "sexy" if I dare use that adjective!!

Colin, it was really a boost to me to be able to have a pace like that today. I should be capable of easily running 10 km at a sub-5:30 pace but my previous efforts over the past 4 weeks were sure not encouraging, 6:30 to 7:00 paces and on shorter distances. So this really made me happy and especially as it was done after earlier exercise had taken place and I do tend to get more tired as the day goes on. So one of these days I need to try to do that distance in the early morning and with a clear surface get it below 6:00! It makes me finally feel that there is hope I will be able to get my pace and endurance up. Maybe I was not giving it enough time, after all I've only returned to running for about 4 weeks now. I must learn to be more patient with these things.

I am also looking forward to seeing how tired I will be tomorrow and there are three railcars coming in sometime to be filled with canola..........

Hey Garry, you know I feel like I have the stamina for running that far but my knees are my weak links. They just won't take the pounding......65 years of sports and a relatively active life have taken their toll. Walking is my thing and my dogs (all 3) love it. Calorie burning at that pace tho is very slow.
I'll have to do more adjusting my diet and eating more regularly. Margaret is good for me in that respect so I'm lucky to have that influence around me.

Would be great if we were both under 200 when we meet up in the spring.

Good evening Colin,

I always wonder how being morbidly obese in my life for a good 25 years will affect my joints in the longer term.

To be honest, I will always be a walker and I enjoy walking more than running. But I run because I can do it and at least in the past I was good at it. Plus I was always inactive for most of my life so it was sort of cool to finally become "athletic" at an older age and to discover the benefits of it. And there is no feeling better than being in a race and seeing the face of some kid in there 20's when I come wheezing, sweating and panting by them!

That would be a great moment if we were both below 200 when I come to get the car, but I expect to hit that in a week and by late winter to be below 195 if not challenging 190!!!!!

Yes, a good partner is very helpful in eating better and that is why I am so glad that my gf and I are going through this experience together, along with mom we all help and encourage each other all the time. If we are not losing ourselves then hopefully one of us is and that helps to keep us motivated.

It happened!!!!!

Brace yourselves! I hit the scale and I'm 200 this morning!! I had hoped for 201 but a solid, unblinking hit on 200. Wow. 61 lb after surgery, about 10 weeks time and here I am!

Wonderful, great, terrific and beyond belief is what I am feeling right now. How did I ever deserve to be this luckly in my life I'll never know but I give thanks to God that I have been as fortunate in my life as I have in so many areas. The Greeks were right, "The Gods (do) look after the fools".

What a ride this has been. Now maybe another 10 to 20 pounds and I can start having a daily spoonfull of peanut butter!!!!!!!

Must have been that terrific run ysterday that pulled me down??

Borat Briefs! Maybe stretchmark spandex though!

My pace times are always given in minutes/km. Only some US runners talk about paces of minutes/mile. As races are normally run in 5, 10, 21 and 42 km distances it is minutes per km for probably 99% of participants.

I've always had as a goal to run my races, regardless of distance, at a 6 minute pace or better. So far, it has held up. That is why 6:08 for 7.5 km is something that I am fully satisfied with at this point. Sure on a totally flat course but also icy and after some exercise previously that day so I am content.

Colin, when/if I break 200 it will be for the 3rd time in my adult life. I crossed the 200 barrier when I was 14 I believe, broke 200 when I was 17 (and in love), again when I was 35 ish and the nun broke up with me and then again 43 when my ex-wife walked out on me. Sort of nice to be looking forward to doing it again but under such happier conditions!

My role model is Leo. Started running with two buddies when he was 80. They stopped 3 years later and are now dead. Leo must be 87 or 88 and still doing 5 and 10 km runs. He must have the pick of the ladies these days!!

Well, now it's your turn to be a role model, Garry -- I'm sure a lot of members here look up to you after all the less than favourable events in your life and now a journey to weight control.

Keep us up on developments please -- I find it very inspiring and encouraging.
The more we talk about this the more it will 'stick'.

I just finished watching a documentary film in Netflix. I have the US version so I'm not sure if it's in the Canadian one. It's called Hungry for Change. It talks about the diet industry as well as the food industry and why we fail when we "diet". Worth the watch, and like any documentary, take the information with a grain of salt, ( no pun intended) and make your own informed decision.

Well as this appears to be the confession thread, here goes. First of all I come from a family of 5 siblings. 2 brothers and 1 sister who are all built like fence posts and then there is my other sister who has always struggled with her weight and me who has struggled with my weight now for about 10 years.
For those thinking no wonder you need new knees let the record show that my knees were wore out about 10 years ago. 12+ years of cutting meat, wearing crappy rubber boots, on solid concrete for 10-14 hours a day longer during wild game season, took its toll on my joints. During this time I was in the best shape of my life. 6'-1" 220 lbs of solid muscle......life was good! Then one day while setting a 25lb tub of meat down on a floor scale I collapsed on top of it.....What The Hell!! This unexpected day was the begining of a 3yr nightmare. "Well its pretty obvious you need a lower spinal fusion" was the recommendation of my highly respected specialist. "Ok sir thank you" and a date was set. The date came and went but I didn't show up for the fusion! (one of my better decisions in life) However, I did need to get out of meat cutting and into less physically demanding work and thats when the muscule began to leave and the fat began to build! Every year about 8lbs more. Well like I said this has been going on for about 10 years!
Well my CCF FRIENDS its time for CHANGE!! (me and my walker are now stepping down off the soap box)
Just before my surgery Feb 1st I tipped the scale at 278lbs!! This is the heavist I've ever been...... but......I have a plan. For me its a simple plan......EAT BETTER EAT LESS!!! And exercise some each day the best I can under my current situation.
Thank you Garry for starting this thread. I had been thinking on my life style, weight and over all health for some time but this thread helped to push me to action!
So for an update, over the past 3 weeks I think I've been able to shrink my stomach as it takes very little to fill me up. I'm not on a diet but I eat better stuff and I eat much less. I've lost 20 lbs, I'm now at 258lbs. I'm not sure what my ideal weight should be but I would be very happy to get to 220lbs and then take it from there. The first 20 lbs came off faster than what I thought and I expect the next 20 (my next goal) to come off slower. I'm not sure how long this journey will take and I'm sure there will be some bumps along the way. I'm just glad I started. Thanks for reading.

More and more on here are being inspired in the same way so you're not alone and I'll second the "thank you" to Garry for starting the thread.

I have to agree with Colin, that is quite the story!!! I bet that was a surprise collapsing at work like that! What was the cause? Was it actually spinal? How long ago did you know you would require new knees?

That is fantastic that you are down 20 pounds! That is great! You have a very good plan with eating better and eating less. That is my plan as well although I've been slipping lately (booooo). I am in better shape now than I have been for quite a while but I still have a loooooooooooooong way to go. The weight is not coming off like I hoped so I just have to get my act together and be more disciplined. No one to blame this on but myself....however, I am on my way, so I'm going to stay positive!

I returned from my 4 days in Edmonton. Much fun, hit all the Value Villages but mostly picked up Pokemon books for my son and double pointed knitting needles for mom, she is a sock knitting machine right now and even though I've acquired for her some 4 to 500 needles she always wants more. Plus she teaches knitting locally as well so she helps provide needles for her students.

I went shopping for a helmet. I ended up with a G-Force Pro Eliminator, matt black right now since I am considering getting it painted. $220 including GST I think it was and I'm happy with that. I was surprised how hot I found wearing it was and now see why everyone keeps the visor up! No luck in finding a G-Force Junior for my son yet. not for AC'ing but for his open wheel/fenderless go-cart abd being on gravel roads and all.

A bit of an unexpected setback to report. Before I left I was starting to think that the batteries in the scale needed to be recharged. Not a big deal but I am aware that as the batteries require charging the scale reads light. This was last Wednesday I think and so I warned my gf that the next morning the scale might read higher and why and then recharged the batteries overnight.

So yes, I was then 203 instead of 200 and my gf was 2 lb heavier as well. Oddly though I still felt so good. If I've lost 58 or 61 lb it isn't that big of a deal, my gf was pretty disappointed but I am glad at least that I was able to prepare her ahead of time.

BUt the trip must have been good and I am seeing what I hope is an accurate 201 this morning and even my gf is telling me that she expects to have lost weight was well so we'll see how she makes out when about 2 hours when she wakes up!!

Somebuddy, when I read your post I wasn't sure how to respond. I had to step back and to give it some thought overnight. This morning it is a very emotional state for me. I am firstly so excited/proud/thrilled for you to be embarking on this path of a better life for yourself. Having already dropped 20 lb is clearly showing that you're on the right track and it is paying off benefits! It feels so fantastic, doesn't it? The nasty part about gaining weight is that as you stated, it is a somewhat slow process. Who ever notices 2/3 of a lb a month????

But losing 20 lb in 3 weeks, well that is dramatic and something that we notice in terms of how much less mass we have to haul around and how much better we feel about ourselves.

There was no doubt that even more than having final dyno numbers from Manny this is the best sort of posting that I could have read and that you feel I was able to help to motivate you to do this is a real kindness for you to say to me. As I had stated in the very beginning it is sometimes a challenge to be open and honest with people about a variety of subjects and being obese for me was one of them. So if I struggled with it and was able to make some headway then others needed to know that they are not alone and that rather than just feeling shameful all the time that this is about taking control in one's life and making some decisions. Kudos to you for doing it without surgery too but for anyone who is overweight, don't ever let your pride get in your way of seeking out any and all solutions to getting a better life for yourself. Everyone deserves to be as happy as they can in their life and if it is losing weight or getting a nice sports car then you need to form and carry out a plan to make it happen.

What a wonderful year 2013 is shaping up to be, I can't imagine the women reacting to the new breed of fit fellows in their 'vettes hitting the streets once the snow is gone!

Now with luck Somebuddy you'll be another's role model and that will provide you with the strength you need if you ever find yourself getting discouraged.

I doff my hat, raise a clenched fist in victory and hope for you ongoing success.

Maybe we'll have to do the same thing we do with our cars, we'll have to open a thread for before and after for drivers!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for giving my day such a boost. Talking about this with Riley and Colin has been such a strong and positive experience and I'm glad that you're "out" about doing the same for yourself too........

Think of it as building a faster, quicker car. Builders go to extremes to whittle weight out of a car so that it will perform it`s best. In the car, you are part of it. Think of it not as losing weight but as doing your part in making your car perform better. HMMM. I could could do a little of that myself. It`s all in how you look at things, a new perspective. ;) :driving:
 
my current "problem, is too much skin after dropping over 30 pounds. If i was 6'5" it would be fine but I'm the same numbers but in reverse.

I'm currently using a treadmill and weights in an effort to look less scary this summer.

It really is a difficult thing to make such an extensive change in one's lifestyle, my hat is off to everyone here who is working hard to improve their health. :seeya:
 
I'm very proud of everyone here. It's really hard at first, but so worth it. Educating yourself on nutrition is key. Not everything "healthy" tastes like crap, it's just that we are so used to processed foods and all the chemicals that are in them to make them tasty or last longer that's the problem. Eat your veggies, and if your are not a big veggie person then get a juicer and juice your veggies with oranges and apples to make it taste better. Keep up the great work amd don't stress if you fall off a bit.:thumbup:
