Looks like that was after they switched from machine guns to cannons as weapons. Even though they carried more less ammo and fired slower they were much more effective at bring down enemy aircraft due to their mass and armour piercing capability. Especially due to self sealing tanks and armour increases on aircraft became more and more prevalent
