Dave, drag racing IMHO is a participant sport. While it is not unusual to have thousands of spectators in attendance. NHRA National and Regional events are well attended but pics like this showing few folks watching is not unusual. Reminds me of the old Sackville Drag City track in NS. Wasn't in operation for very long due to poor attendance but we use to go there on weekends after it was abandoned and have informal races with whoever showed up until they gated it off from access.Or out on that old abandoned 1/4 mile stretch of black top from when the new highway went through.
