Attempt Theft Of C8 Vid.

Curious. Have there been instances of that happening ? Wouldn’t surprise me actually but I have never heard or read about it. .found this…
If it is believable.
Yes, the security features of OnStar have been circumvented in the past. In 2015, a device called OwnStar was developed by Samy Kamkar, which could intercept communications between OnStar’s system and the vehicle, allowing unauthorized users to locate, unlock, or start the vehicle remotely. General Motors responded by updating the OnStar server software and RemoteLink app to prevent such attacks.

OnStar has taken several measures to prevent hacking:
1. Software Updates: OnStar has developed software updates to patch security flaws, such as those allowing hackers to control vehicle functions remotely. For example, GM updated the RemoteLink app to address vulnerabilities.
2. Security Enhancements: GM has worked to enhance the security of its OnStar systems, though it took several years to fully address some vulnerabilities.
3. Countermeasures: GM has implemented countermeasures to prevent unauthorized access through the OnStar app, including disabling certain features until fixes were available.
4. Documentation and Guidelines: OnStar provides documentation on security protocols, such as the “Stolen Vehicle Assistance” guidelines, which outline procedures for stopping the engine in stolen vehicles.
I would guess hackers develop bypasses to security countermeasures almost as fast as the countermeasures are developed. This is a world of hi tech on both sides of the law.

I can't argue with you, but I point out that OnStar on the C8 is integrated into the infotainment / touch screen. It is very hard if not impossible to shut it down without affecting the car's systems. I can't remember the actual issue, but I'm pretty sure the only way to do it is to kill the antenna.
I may be wrong for the latest but they use to just plug a laptop into the OBD port and run a hack program to disable it.

For sure. Too much technology isn’t always a good thing. On the bright side though the C8 was number five on the list of LEAST stolen vehicles last year. I don’t worry about it hardly at all. Keep it locked , duh , and keep the fob in a faraday pouch and don’t leave it in any secluded area and you should be fine. And that’s also why you have insurance.

I have not read up on this in several years, but I'm not sure the infotainment area is accessible from the OBD port. It would be via OTA though.
Actually, it must be somehow because ota updates can be done at the dealer. How else would they do it?

Through the OBD port using proprietary software would be my guess as well. Unless perhaps they have GM send it out over the air but then again perhaps there are updates or tweaks that have to be done through the OBD port for whatever reason. Good question. I shall investigate , lol .

The reason I mentioned it is because I had an update fail 4 times and took it to the dealer. He got it installed ... somehow.

Yes, you can update your car’s software without going to the dealership in many cases, thanks to Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. However, this depends on your car’s make, model, and year.
Modern vehicles, especially newer models and electric cars, are equipped with OTA update capabilities. These updates are sent directly to your car via cellular or Wi-Fi connections, allowing you to receive the latest software enhancements without visiting a dealership.
To update your car’s software:
1. Check your vehicle’s infotainment system for available updates.
2. Connect your car to a Wi-Fi network or use its built-in cellular connection.
3. Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install the update.
Keep in mind that while many updates can be done remotely, some may still require a visit to the dealership, especially for older models or more complex firmware updates.
If your car doesn’t support OTA updates, you may need to explore alternative options or consult with your manufacturer for specific update procedures.
So , it would appear that “ it depends “ . As usual.

There was a PDR screen resolution improvement update on my C7. Had to take it to the dealer. Have never seen or heard of an OTA update for the C7.
From what I’ve read it seems that the anti theft features on the C8 at least are pretty robust. The alarm goes off if the car is rocked or tipped or an attempt to put it on a trailer for an example. Or break a window obviously. I don’t know how that could be disabled without the fob or a cloned fob . One day I just tossed my keys in the window onto the seat and the alarm started screaming. And , it is one of the least stolen vehicles out there according to the “ experts “ lol. Far too many of them these days….

The C8 Corvette features several anti-theft technologies:
1. Inclination Sensor: Triggers the alarm if the vehicle is jacked up or towed, indicating potential theft.
2. Intrusion Sensor: Monitors the interior for unauthorized entry and activates the alarm if detected.
3. Key Fob Security: The key fob goes into a “sleep” mode when not moved, making relay attacks harder.
4. Robust ECU Lockdown: The engine control unit is more secure, making key reprogramming hacks difficult.
5. Alarm System: Activates if the vehicle is tampered with or if there is unauthorized entry.
Additional measures like GPS trackers and kill switches can enhance security further .

While the C8 Corvette has robust anti-theft features, there are potential vulnerabilities:
1. Key Fob Relay Attacks: Although the key fob goes into a “sleep” mode to prevent relay attacks, sophisticated thieves can still attempt to bypass this by cloning keys wirelessly.
2. Hacking and Bypassing: There are concerns about hackers bypassing GM’s security protocols, though GM has implemented cybersecurity measures to mitigate these risks.
3. Physical Theft: Despite electronic security, physical methods like towing can still be used to steal the vehicle.
Overall, while the C8 Corvette’s security is strong, no system is completely immune to determined thieves.

Not sure on the rest but my C7 alarm is triggered by entry and rocking or moving. Found that out one time I had left my windows down. Car is set to lock as soon as I get 3 metres away from it. Left my phone on the seat and just reached it to get and it set the alarm off. Also when wifey is with me at the car wash. I get out to wash the car and if she stays in and then moves around it sets the alarm off.

Same with the C8. Went to get gas. Wife in car. Me filling car. wife move. alarm went off. Me run around like a chicken with his head cut off. LOL

I've learned to fast draw the key fob and turn it off pretty quick
On the C8 I can shut it off by holding the unlock button for a few seconds. I do that if someone is in the car with me, or when I'm washing the car etc.

I'm slowly remembering to do that as well... I told her it's the car's way of telling her to get the hell out and help me... That didn't work that well ... ;)

Both times mine went off , once when I threw the keys in the window onto the seat and one time that I don’t know why it went off, I got an email shortly afterwards from OnStar . Within about 10 minutes if I remember correctly.
