Think restoring Corvettes is tough business? Doyle McCormack found this old Alco Locomotive in Mexico brought it back to the states and completely restored it in Nickel Plate Road livery.

Wow.. Speaking of old locomotive love, have you heard from Rob at all Murray? Just curious as I haven't for a long while now.

I am a grandchild of a CNR Steam Engineer. I was on the train every weekend to and from Edmonton and Jasper mid 1960’s to early 1970’s

Grandpa operated the Power House & Laundry at the Jasper Park Lodge.

Who knew my first position in my career was working with the Architect (Sunderland) who designed the iconic Edmonton CN Tower (1966).
I worked along side Sunderland for West Edmonton Mall and Mall of America - among many other fascinating projects.

With a Corvette and a Pickup to relate the scale of this BigBoy.

This one much larger in scale and all operational.

I am pretty sure that @Bluvette75 can add much more about BigBoy ... 😁👍🏻

The Union Pacific "Big Boy" 4012 has undergone restoration and is set to return to the rails May/June 2019. They have had a fire in the box testing steam pressure. 4012 is unique in that it was never taken out of service by UP, just sent for a rest so to speak.

Spence very interesting history and some nice train show pics.

No idea so many were interested in locomotives. Great stuff.

4012 is massive

Was scared shitless going by the old steamers in for repair at the Farnham yards. They had seven tracks in the shop that could take two locos each. It was at the beginning of the diesel era. Took out a diesel that had been repaired on to the turntable and then out to the main yard tracks.
My father was chief clerk in the yard so I went there in the summer (mid fifties) and watched the steamers coming in from Montreal. The trains were broken up in Farnham to go over the mountains in to the US so lots of activity. The Farnham repair shops were transferred to Montreal (Angus shops) in the fifties or early sixties as well as the cripple track (wagon repair tracks).
Almost got thrown out of the Angus shops once when I said that the diesels replaced the steamers because they were more powerful. Got an earful that the steamers were a lot stronger - just needed more manpower.
Great times seeing the streamer locos leaving the station spinning the wheels on the initial stroke.
Old memories that our kids or now grankids will never see, unless they go to a museum.

Most of History that is closest to many of us can sadly fade. The Park Lodge in Jasper is no longer CNR and my family ties to it have passed. I was able to go to Jasper up to about the turn of this century (wow never thought I’d be saying that phrase) and be able to find someone who I could revisit my past with. This is what really makes missing this year’s Alberta Mountain Cruise very difficult to miss out on - even though it appears Jasper might be planned to be just a drive-by. It has been about 25 years now and I will get back there.
