Big wheel being machined. Pretty sure it is a steam locomotive wheel with the counter weight for the driving rods. Shorter spokes on one side. Anyone know for sure what is happening in this pic? That is one big machine, think Tourmax has one in his garage!

The evolution of a city...product and people arriving by ship transported to trains and trucks or just live on the other side of the tracks. The round structure in the front is the remains of a locomotive turntable from the steam era. Steam locomotives were typically shorter than the diesels that replaced them. Steam trains were dangerous machines to run backwards with tender up front so railways used the turntable a lot. They ran out of room to make this one bigger.

Found a bit more about #513. The Railway is the New Haven and the town is Sanbon, Connecticut. Fascinated by these old maps. Thought you might find it interesting.

great detective work Murray.
this would make a nice small model railroad switch layout.
and a great background story.

Amazing the detail Graham that scale railroaders can get in their "switching" yards. You're right it would be a nice set up.

Here is the station from 513
