I think those rear axles should be another 20' aft, or they could have left the original wheels on it and towed it out in the country.

I think you are correct Murray. By design it would keep a train from derailing to the point where it would totally derail.I think it is a"derail" to stop the train from slamming into, in this case, a tunnel or off a bridge or perhaps a drive thru line if it came off the rails.
