I can relate on the price, wife took it to the local dealer, and it was $119. She had the top down, car got lots of stares and comments on how nice it was. The service guy was complaining about having to work, and work the weekend, to which my wife agreed and said she was in the same boat. He said, "Yeah, but at least you're driving a Corvette!"

Funny that there can be a big-a$$ed 4X4 worth 3 times the price that no one will give a second look at, but roll up in that car and it absolutely stops traffic, and people formulate instant opinions on your wealth. Not that I'm complaining, but I find it hilarious that some kid paid more for his Hyundai than I did this car, yet the perception is the car is $100 000. I love it, actually, to know that I have a real keeper that people think is worth wayyyy more than I paid.

A little off topic but it made me laugh once when ten years ago I saw a crew cab, long box, leather interior, 4X4 Diesel, $80,000 Dodge truck at Canadian Tire and it said "Poor Man's Cadillac" on the box. I thought it was funny because that truck cost more than a Cadillac of the same year.

I too love the perception that these cars are worth a lot more than what they actually are. I still get comments on it.

GM recommends Mobil 1 and so do I, CTC and Wal-mart have it on special quite often for $28., when i built my garage i installed a pit....best thing since sliced bread, but don't tell the building inspector .. :nono:

I run Amsoil in both my Vette and my truck and I can't say enough good things about it. It isn't cheap, but I feel that it it well worth the money. I run the 0W30 in both my vehicles. They claim it is their highest quality oil and it what they recommend for the C5. (although all their oils are good) I have noticed higher fuel economy with Amsoil as well........ (vs Mobil 1).......... but only by 1 or 2 MPG.

Would just like to add that I personally would never lift a vette from just one corner. Many write ups on how distortion can start if they are not lifted equally from both sides and front and back at the same time and at the same height of course.

i built two drive-on platforms for my driveway out of landscape timbers and 2x8's, 12 ft long x 16" wide. i sit them on concrete blocks to get whatever height i need. works out great for many things not just oil changes. the only drawback is the weight, they are a real grunt to move around. but they work well enough until i build my new shop.:canada:

Hello everybody,

I use Mobil 1 Synthetic oil in my 2002. I do the work myself and am lucky enough to have a hoist in my garage which makes it that much easier. I am a true believer of changing the oil on a regular basis regardless if I have reached the mileage and always change the oil just before I store the car.

I do lift the back and let it all drain out and its always done when she has been sitting over night so hopefully most of the oil is drained down.

Its just part of the fun of storing the car and starting fresh in the spring:)

A little different here ,I bought 4 car jacks and modified them so the pucks are pretty much on the jacks .The car is super stable but I place #5 shop jack under the rear for safety . Usually remove the wheels for cleaning , vacuum the radiator ,clean the wheel wells and rocker panels .The car can be tilted a little toward the drain plug .The process is usually done twice a year on a rainy dreary day .I use Mobil 1 5-30 and Mobil 1 filters @ about 50-60 % used .

So the ramps I got for Christmas aren't going to make it OK to change the oil in the car myself?

Dang--was looking forward to it.

Sure they will. It's how it's done here at my place.

You'll have as much fun as I do......and I even get Marg to help since she's quite mechanically inclined....

Cheers,

C.

Your ramps will be perfect. I used to drive the car over some 2x12 wood so the jack would be able to slide under the car, jack her up, place a couple of car jacks in front and then jack up the back. I used to enjoy this as well as I could fall asleep under the car and my wife thought I was actually doing some work :D

The hoist was an afterthought once I realized I had the height. Besides, I think the kids were getting tired of me escorting them out the garage as they walked by the car:nono:

As long as you do it safe, it's always fun!!

I change my own oil in the Vette,I do not trust anyone.
I took my Tahoe to Great Canadian OIl Changers and some little "A Hole showed me the transmission oil that was in my truck as brown and dirty.
Funny thing is I just had it changed at my mechanic
I checked when I got home and it was pink and clean.
I had a "come to Jesus" meeting with the owner.
We get the 2012 Cruze do at Scott Drumond Chev in Cambellford as it is under warranty and I can trust them.

Castrol Syntec from Costco 6 liters for $39.99 and you can even catch it on sale sometimes, best bang for your buck imo. Buy a bunch of GM filters from Corvette Central or your local GM and your set!

I always thought that being Italian , there would be nothing but pure virgin olive oil in your Vette

I always do my own lube jobs. A neighbour has one of those oil furnaces in his shop that burns motor oil so I even have a handy local disposal site rather than the 15 mile run to the local land fill recycle site in Lindsay. The Corvette only has the two grease fittings on the rear suspension so that isn't a problem. The oil filter and drain plug are easy to get at. I made up eight foot long lead up ramps that attach to my fold up steel ramps. Works great. If I had the ceiling height, I'd put in a hoist. If the bylaw people wouldn't get ugly, I'd put in a pit with an exhaust fan. When I look at the receipts that came in the glove box of the car, I see that I am paying myself pretty well to change my own oil. Many years ago, when you got a lube job, you actually got a lube job. ALL the hinges, latches etc. got lubricated as well and fluid levels were checked. I wouldn't count on that getting done today.
