Recent changes to the Ontario Drive Clean program will no longer see vehicles less than 7 years old require emissions testing. The previous cut-off was for 5 year old cars, but since studies have shown that only a very small percentage of cars between the ages of 5 and 7 emit beyond the acceptable limits, the new cut-off for mandatory testing has been increased to cars 7 years and older.

A typical drive clean test costs $35 + HST, so $35 saved should be good news for all owners with cars built post-2004. But there are a few drivers who are indeed forced to pay for an emissions test because their birthday falls between April 25th and Sept 1st (before the new changes took effect).

It looked as though the Liberals promised to change the mandatory testing period to win favour with voters, whereas the conservatives vowed to abolish the program outright.
