Just finished talking with the SAAQ. The lux tax is 100% trudeau s fault. He imposed a lux tax on vehicles that cost more than 40,000$!!!!! and are 7 years old or less. Quebec has a cylinder tax but no lux taxes. So our cars will have to pay this for 7 years and they are not devaluated fast enough. My C8 lost only 38$ after 1 and a half year!!!

The LUX tax is 100% the fault of the Conservatives by electing a lead who is an idiot. LOL
Quit whining about the government and join a party and make real change or shut up! ;)
Taxes are a necessity and will always be one way or another. You have choices. Buy the cars and accept the down sides or don't buy one and not accept the down sides.

The luxury tax in Canada was introduced by the Liberal Party. This tax was first proposed in the 2021 Federal Budget and was aimed at ensuring that wealthier Canadians contribute more in taxes. The Select Luxury Items Tax Act, which includes this tax, received royal assent in June 2022 and came into effect on September 1, 2022. I assume that you are implying that if the Tories had a decent party leader last election they may have won and we would not have this cash grab situation . Alas , we must now wait until Jagmeat gets his pension time in , lol .:WillyNilly:

This is a very abusive tax. I understand taxes but if you know where most of it is going , you would complain also. Do you want to buy a car, that cost 40 grand or less? You get 4 wheels and a steering wheel today, for that. We pay a lux tax when we buy and now we need to pay, a lux tax, every year for registration. You are wrong about conservatives the tax came in from the liberals,2018! Also, I do not sit back and complain here or around friends. I write or call representatives and tell them how I feel. If we all accept abuse and say nothing then we deserve what we get but I will not accept things as I see them heading.

The $40k luxury tax is a Quebec thing, not federal, so you can't blame Trudeau. The federal luxury tax is the one that kicks in over $100k.

I see that cars over 3,000kg are exempt from the Quebec tax, so if your next vehicle is a Hummer you can likely avoid it :)

Wrong. I just spoke to a representative. I staid on the phone for 3 hours , to get the correct info. She was very clear , it is federal. I wanted to see who is abusing us , again. Quebec has a stupid cylinder tax. My C8 pollutes less than most 2 liter engines on the highway. All these taxes are abusive. It s a way to take more from us to cover up/recoup, the waste of money that they do.

It is always like that no matter which party is in power. They want more of our money and try to couch it in eco parlance to try and make us feel good about paying more.
I'll beg to disagree with you on the QC lux tax though.
Although minimal compared to JT's tax it is still money out of our pocket.
I have nothing against taxes per se when the money is used to benefit society as a whole. It is just all the frivolous BS spending that goes on that pisses me off.
And, I believe, this is what leads to the purportedly "underground" economy.
Heaven forbid that we go over to a cashless society where the powers that be can track everything we do.

Tax money wasted - really?
A quick story to help with your blood pressure.
I have a small grassed circle on my dead-end street delineating a turning radius.
Periodically, I will pay my lawn care guy $25.00 extra to cut it - it takes him all of 10 minutes, and he's happy to do it.
When the City cuts it, without a lie, they send 2 trucks, complete with a ride-on as well as a push mower, and 3 people to do the job.
One guy doesn't leave his truck.
It still takes them 10 minutes to cut it, but then they sit and shoot the breeze for a bit, admiring their efforts.
Minimum, I'm sure it costs 10 fold ($250.00) to cut that same piece of grass.
Here's the best part:
This past Friday I had the circle cut by my guy as I was entertaining and wanted it to look good.
On Monday, the City came by, and after deliberating for 5 minutes, they cut it again!

Assumption confirmed. New leader isn't much better, but his competition has diminished so who knows. Anyway, the point is it exists. Live with it or don't buy an expensive car. Put your money into a $249,999.99 boat instead! ;)

Saying diminished is incredibly generous. The results of the next one fortunately are a forgone conclusion .

Sounds reasonable. LOL
Up until your comment I thought that was only here in QC.

In a town in Quebec 42 % of the budget goes for salaries now. The streets are really bad and they still haven't painted the lines even on 2 or 3 lane roads. 21 employees of the city make over 125,000$ a year. Cities now don't negotiate with employees, they give them what they want because who cares we will raise the taxes.

I looked it up before these posting and it was confusing, so again I called and got the answer directly from employees. Fed.

Should show up when you plate the car.
I think mine no longer has the lux tax but a receipt I have from 2020 shows "Additional fee for luxury vehicle " $50
In 2019 it was $88.50
2017 was $88.75
Unless it has changed it is for "luxury" cars over $40K. Any car over $40K gets the tax
Value is determined by the SAAQ

This is straight from the SAAQ website. Me thinks the employee you talked to needs to read up a bit.

Additional Registration Fee for Luxury Vehicles

If you own a luxury vehicle, you must pay an additional registration fee when you first register your vehicle, and again each year when you renew your vehicle registration.

A passenger vehicle or light truck is considered a luxury vehicle if it meets the following three criteria:
  • it has a net weight of 3,000 kg or less
  • it is 7 years old or less
  • it is worth more than $40,000
The additional annual registration fee equals 1% of the vehicle's value exceeding $40,000.
The Select Luxury Items Tax Act came into force in Canada on September 1, 2022. As a result, a federal luxury tax now applies to new vehicles manufactured after 2018 that have not been previously registered and that are worth more than $100,000.
If your vehicle is subject to the federal luxury tax, the additional registration fee for luxury vehicles is payable on that tax.
