Visible hand-cranked gravity gas pump. Many early gasoline pumps had a glass cylinder on top. Fuel was manually pumped up into the cylinder until it was full. The gasoline was let out into the customer's tank by gravity, as indicated by the measurement markings on the glass, and the number of gallons the customer requested. Customers could watch the gas flowing into their tank and make sure they got the correct amount, as seen in this picture.
