So, don't let common sense get in the way of a rule that in this case made no sense? if the ball was actually buried to the extent it would have been a difficult retrieval - well then yes. But if the ball had not ended up where it did it would have been a double. So, no hit, no runs - hard to reconcile using logic.
 
He knew the rules. Not the first time it has happened. Smart play not touching it as much as I wish he had.
Touching it means nothing. If it's stuck it's a ground rule. If it's not, then it's a fair ball. The Umps and New York ruled it was stuck whether it was or it wasn't.
