Touching it means nothing. If it's stuck it's a ground rule. If it's not, then it's a fair ball. The Umps and New York ruled it was stuck whether it was or it wasn't.
Sorry but you are wrong. If Dean had grabbed the ball it would have instantly become live. The ball wasn't stuck. It was just wedged where it hit between the cushion and the wall and would have released easily. He could have picked it up but he knew the rule and the smart play was not to touch it, signal the ump and avoid losing the World Series.

Please point out that rule. I don't believe you are correct.
You can't say it was stuck if you don't touch it. It may not have been stuck and he making it look stuck is not fair either. The play should continue until the ump says it's over.

I seem to have misplaced my 100 page MLB rule book but if the player grabs the ball instead of signaling the ump, it becomes live. Wrigley field is famous for balls getting caught in the Ivy that lines the walls but if a player jumps up and grabs it negates the ground rule double. See what Google has to say about it.
