The rise of the machines. Chat GPT's newest model has achieved AGI according to Jenson Haung . If anyone would know he would. Although it is in NVIDIA's best interests if it were so ......
On that note, Chat GPT was asked about the probability of human extinction.... Sucks to be a young person these days....

ChatGPT

ChatGPT, the generative AI chatbot developed by OpenAI, answered with the following:

“My best estimate is around 5% that AI causes human extinction by September 2036, with a plausible range of roughly 1—15%.

“That is deliberately a wide range. There is no reliable way to assign a precise probability because the question depends on several unknowns: how quickly AI capabilities improve, whether systems become capable of pursuing long-horizon goals autonomously, whether they can evade human control, and how effectively governments and labs manage those risks.

Agreed . I would think that the biggest threat will be the development of a virus which is highly contagious and deadly, think worse than Ebola , for which the developer has at the same time either developed a vaccine or a cure . A rogue Nation like North Korea or Iran or just some rich nutcase hidden away in their mountain hideout. Very effective, not stopped by borders or military might and relatively cheap to produce.
We are at the catch 22 point in that if responsible governments and private corporations were to implement enforceable safe guards to prevent this and other nefarious uses of ever more powerful AI the world's nutbars will do no such thing. I'm afraid we are in a race to the bottom. Makes the old Cold War deterrent of assured mutual destruction moot . It's my children and grandchildren I worry about. It used to be how will they get along in life . Now it's will they even have one . Scary as hell . Fingers crossed and prayers I suppose.

For anyone with old drives kicking around this is a very versatile device and amazingly reasonable cost. Been looking for something like this for a while having quite a collection of now unused drives . This is the complete package including power supply. Easier than pulling your PC or Mac apart . And only $40.00 .

Interesting video regarding streaming services and how they have increasingly reduced choice and increased prices over the last several years . Also shown are some of the so called " pirate " streaming sites that are available and that many are moving to because of the paid providers greed . I'm not at all suggesting that you check out any of the ones mentioned of course ........ ;)

I worry about torrents, but I do have a TVIP with 20,000 channels. :D
Only issue is it's mostly all live. No PVR though I do have OBS studio and an HDMI capture box.
I still have satellite tv for recording stuff, but it is losing stuff to streaming services. The Leafs were only on Sportsnet plus last night and often on Prime.
I gladly pay for content if it removes commercials. I would need to record stuff then.

At least when it's recorded you can fast forward.... there is another one I came across a while back that allows streaming multiple channels using VLC player . I'll see if I can find it again.

Here is the VLC one . I haven't gotten around to trying it yet though.

Ya, I tried one about a month ago. Pretty good but it can be a little cludgy and slow.

You were saying your internet isn't stellar so there's that . I'm going to check this out later . I've got a 500 Mbs connection which might help some .And most people thought that that with all of the new streaming services showing up that they could finally ditch cable . Now with so many available and the fragmentation of programming across all of these services and big price increases cable isn't looking so bad after all . The consumer as usual gets the shaft . But there is always Ghostware.....

Same old story.... When on the one hand big business billionaires are screwing you over .....Well....There's another hand for free right around the corner. (Disney Q3 earnings were over $25 billion...Poor Netflix Q3 earnings were just under $13 billion). Yup. They are suffering.
