While there are differing viewpoints about the overall impact of COVID-19, it is a new virus and is not like the typical annual influenza. I had the opportunity to study pandemic planning in 2005/6 and work with the Public Health Agency of Canada - it scared the crap out of me. In January I warned my family and friends to prepare for a worst case scenario; most laughed it off. The main thing to keep in mind with a new virus is the complete lack of immunity across the entire world population. COVID-19 seems to affect people in different ways but the death rate is much higher than typical influenza; 1.5 to 3.5% of all COVID-19 cases will result in death, versus .014 for the annual influenza across North America. The only way to avoid contracting COVID-19 is by avoiding any exposure to it. Governments have given us directives but over the long term and until there is a vaccine, try to avoid exposure. PLEASE.
