How much is glass insurance for our cars?
I have a separate insurance policy for glass only on the Corvette with AMI. I've paid $186 a year for this since I bought the car new in 2008.

So they will likely be spending most of the $1860 they have collected from me on this replacement. My deductible is only $50 which I think is pretty good.

Once you get your new windshield, get some glass insurance..If you replace a windshield once every 10 years in your vette it is well worth it..
I do have separate glass only insurance with AMI for $186/year $50 deductible.

What I pay covers my car for the 5 months I have it stored, reduces my collision deductable to $200.00 . My glass coverage has a $50.00 deductable. Insurance while driving is $631.00 for 7 months. My total insurance for a year is about $850..

That seems quite reasonable. We have 3 vehicles insured and only partial year on the Corvette as you have. If I was to pull the Corvette out of the mix the insurance for it is similar, maybe slightly more. It's always a happy day in the spring when I put full insurance back on it and take it out for its first run!

Brent, does your insurance company allow the Installer of your choice and GM oem glass? I personally would only replace it with a GM hud original shield. I checked with my GM dealer not too long ago and they told me about $900 my cost for the glass. Checked around and about $400-500 for labour to R and R.

Checked with my broker earlier this week. AMI I think was the name of the company that specializes in glass insurance. $ 186.00 per year, no cancellation rebates for parked vehicles... The paperwork had a clause that where I get the windshield fixed has to be a glass shop. Their choice where the glass gets replaced unless a glass shop can't get the glass. If a cheaper glass is available I have the option to still get GM to replace and pay the difference.... Glass shop glass was quoted at $1150.00 installed. GM quoted $ 2100.00 installed. So AMI tells me if I want GM glass, I pay the extra $950.00 out of pocket. Once my broker got them on the phone and they told me that, I walked. Five years and I break even on what they would cover....Same as Brian... Hope my DFI coating does the job too ...

Two or three years ago I was thinking of replacing this very same windshield because of many small chips and general overall pitting of the original glass. At that time AMI said I could pay the difference to get GM glass and it was about $250. I decided not to do anything then as it really wasn't all that bad.

Flash forward to now and with the 12" crack a replacement is necessary. I decided to go with non GM glass which according to Crystal is from a "premium" manufacturer, is equal to or better than the original glass, is definitely not "Cheap glass" It finally arrived today so the install is tomorrow and I am paying the $50 deductible only. I hope I've made the right decision!!!!!

If possible, please find out the manufacturer and the cost to purchase the glass if paying cash. Also, is this a HUD specific glass? Hope all goes well Brent.

It is definitely HUD specific glass and with the required connections for my GPS/OnStar antenna box. I ask for the manufacturers name and cash price when I drop off my car tomorrow.

Yes Brent please let us know how this works out. Lots of guys from around Edmonton paying attention.
Every new car or windshield I get without exception finds a chip on the first month.
It also seems windshields pit up really easy in the last years as well; OEM otherwise. Like the glass is softer or something
Thx.
Derek.

Even from Calgary ... this is a very good thread to pay attention to.
I have an exceptional Glass Replacement Company Owner wanting me to share with him on how this works out
as he loves working for people who are enthusiastic with their car as he is with his products and services.
I would think that the most difficult people he has to do work for are those who only think windshields are just glass ...

Read an interesting thread sometime ago on replacing C5Z lightweight/HUD glass that is no longer available from GM. Apparently the standard weight glass is available with and without HUD. Some claim it does not seem to make much difference but I have no idea if that is correct or not. Someone did find a company, in Texas I believe, that made the original thinner Z glass for GM and they will still make it to order. If anyone is interested let me know and I will see if I can dig up the information.

Will be interested to hear what this glass dealer has to say. Also interested in the film that some of you folks have covered their windshields with.

Informative thread guys.

I am guessing most glass places will be negative about this DFI coating.. why??? Cause putting it on can lose you as a customer to them.... if everyone put this stuff on glass places would go broke.

Hey Murray. I have had the DFI coating on mine since early May. (Thx to Brian), and although I can't talk about impact results (and hope I never will....lol), I know it brightens up vision and sure sheds water like no one's business. Here's a link for it.
