Hey everyone. I had an “upgraded trunnion” failure which led to an almost complete engine failure. So I’ve done what any financially responsible adult would do. Take every spare penny and blow it all on a build.
I’ll post some of my finds, lessons learned and 😩moments. I’ll start with the culprit.

What happened to the trunnion? Loose a needle bearing or something?

So that was the start of it. This was followed by the issues with the block. The block had been bored previously and it was suggested by many that because of the boost levels the sleeve integrity would likely be sub par. My builder apparently had the perfect replacement.
With this level of comfort in mind I started ordering.
HAPPY BDAY TO ME!
The pistons went to the shop and the bored in the “new to me” block were carried out.
Yay!!!!

So at this point you might be thinking “WOW! This is going great! This guy is gonna have an animal!”
*stand by for searing rage followed by cries of desperation*
So I go pick up my beautiful clean and machined block and start setting ring gaps and checking bearing clearances. This is where it gets ugly.
Not only did I find two head stud bores cracked but the block wasn’t even close to being correct. It was an early LS1 block.

I'll post some pictures shortly. What happened was the material in the trunnion(s) is of insufficient quality and wore. The wear led to a failure of the bearing case which broke off and the pieces were found in the pan. One possibly two needles were missing and never found.
I was doing some 1/2 mile drag racing and noticed a "low oil pressure" on my last run. Everything just went to s**t from there.

That’s exactly what I was thinking.
So a new block to go with all those new parts...
this engine will be an animal when you’re done. And you will know it’s totally done right. $$$

Excellent thread man. Sucks to be going through this but you likely woke up a few guys thinking of a quick upgrade or repair on an engine.

Look forward to seeing this one back together. 👍

I'll have a spare LS6 block that will be great for an NA build, a magnafluxed, ground and polished crank and a few other bits.
Just need a damn block.
I'm still learning the LS genealogy. I'm trying to find out which casting numbers I can use without sacrificing any qualities.
So far I think I can use casting numbers 12561166, 12561168 and 12559862

The gentleman that runs a club I’m involved with knows the airport manager of an airport in NB. He shuts it down for 3 hours for us.

You got a half mile drag track for your use .... ?.... I consider that lucky as well. Your engine troubles...Not so much.

Here are the pictures of the failed trunnion. I haven’t disassembled the rest but it’s safe to assumed there will be more.
The first one is the new kit I’ll be using.

I see you went with the bushing type trunnions this time. What make were the ones that failed? How many km were on them before they failed?
