and these grocery plastic bags that I was using as garbage bags and poop bags for the dog are not available anymore so I have to buy plastic bags to replace them.... how clever.
well yes ,but some of it, is apparently recycleable.
Most of the supposedly recyclable plastic materials you put in your recycle bin never gets recycled. Only 2 of the 7 kinds of plastic are recycled, although you can put them all in your bin because if you had to pick out all the types you can't recycle, it would never get done and would end up as garbage anyway. But picking through recyclables does give tens of thousands of people a job. Of what's left, those ketchup and mustard bottles, milk jugs, shampoo bottles, salad trays, etc., only about 9% in Canada (considerably less in many municipalities), ever gets recycled due to contamination issues. Yes Gladys, everything you toss in the bin has to be rinsed clean. Otherwise it is discarded and goes for garbage anyway. And by the way, plastic bags are not supposed to be put in your recycle bin either. You are supposed to take them personally to the recycle depots ( I think some grocery stores also accept them), as they tangle and wrap up and jam the recycle machinery. How many of us do that....well yes ,but some of it, is apparently recyclable.
