Part of the charm of Newfoundland is talking to the people.
I have always been amused by " English only " speakers being critical of someone else's accent when speaking in what is perhaps their second or third language other than their native one .

It's not nice to laugh at others.
I speak 2 languages and only one fluently .... Gibberish. I grew up in Gibber.
It's not making fun, it's kidding each other. Big difference between a light hearted poke and a mean slam.
On "Overdrive" they had a joke WITH the ex goalie of Buffalo Marty Biron who after living in Buffalo for about 30 years still has his French accent. He has just as much fun with it as do others. So don't be so "woke"!

Any post on here was light hearted. Pick one.

Relax.
Nobody is being "critical".
I've had the priveledge of working with a vast number of diverse ethnicities over the years.
The suggestion that there is something 'wrong' in lightheartedly discussing their accents is totally without merit.
Be they Canadian, Russian, Indian, or Italian origin, the shared 'chuckle' regarding an accent always responds in "Well, how do you say that?"
My feeling is that the worst thing you could possibly do for these people is to pretend their speech fits perfectly into the locale.
If their efforts to communicate sound 'funny', it's only because it sounds 'funny'- nothing else - no disrespect intended.

I absolutely agree. I have though heard these types of comments being made in a derogatory fashion before. Didn't mean to imply any of the comments in this thread fell into that category. Apparently I should have made that clearer .
I have met some individuals who spoke 5 or 6 languages which I always found impressive if not fascinating. Few people speak a second or third language without some amount of accent unless perhaps they grew up in a bilingual household and learned both from birth .
As for accents in general just consider the dozens of different " accents" you will hear from those who speak English only for example depending on where you happen to be in Canada. Sometimes several within the same province. It's one of the things that makes a particular area unique. As for being relaxed, if I was anymore relaxed I'd have to set an alarm........
