It wouldn't surprise me if the plan to get the corvair off the truck was to undo the tiedowns, then reverse to about 20 or 30K, then stop quick!?!?!? I'm guessing the width of the load is directly proportional to the space between his ears.

Indeed. Although some people don't have to wear a helmet. I don't know if insurance would cover them in an accident or not. Iv'e been riding for around 40 years and luckily never had an accident. I just sold my Harley CVO this past summer. Not sure if I will get another new one or not. So many careless drivers out there these days I'm thinking maybe I should quit while I'm ahead. I have lost to many friends in bike accidents. None of them at fault. People just don't take a second look these days let alone a first look. It's getting worse every day.
I hear you and agree, but I've also seen careless bike riders sitting in blind spots etc. I haven't ridden one in 50 years, but I know what one should do to be as safe as possible. Expect the worst and you'll get the best usually.

I always ride in defence mode. When I first started riding somebody said to me that when I put my helmet on just pretend that you are invisible and that nobody can see you. Best advice ever. I just assume everyone on the road is out to get me and ride like they are. I just lost a friend earlier this year. He had just retired two weeks before. Told his wife he was going to a for ride and would be back in an hour or two. He never returned. Had the right of way at an intersection and a woman didn't stop for her stop sign and broadsided him. He was on life support for a week before the family let him go. Was really rough. Doesn't matter whose fault it is when you are dead. Poor guy spent his working life in the hospital ER saving lives. Than to have his taken away by a careless distracted driver. She got a small fine for killing a man because of the highway traffic act.
I "liked" your post, but that was because of your attitude. Losing a life senselessly is nothing to like, but your story tells just how guarded we all must be. Sorry for your loss.
Even in a car I am aware of such things. Up here with flashing stop lights in one direction and amber in the other still doesn't sink in that it's not a 4 way stop. Seen too many idiots just stop and then go with disregard for the crossing traffic.
