A security camera stationed on the railway line into the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela has captured the moment a passenger train carrying 218 people derailed, pushing all eight carriages off course and killing at least 80 people.

The dramatic footage was captured by a security camera stationed ahead of the site of the crash.

The train, which was headed for the coastal city of Ferrol, derailed at 8.42pm on a sharp curve some four kilometres from the city of Santiago de Compostela. Initial reports show that the train was travelling at 190 kilometres per hour – more than twice as fast as it should have been.

The video has not been verified by Spanish authorities. It was published on the website of daily newspaper "El Pais" on Thursday.

The crash is the nation’s deadliest railway disaster since 1944
