A wood burner. So carbon neutral !

LOl.... NOT. Burning wood releases more carbon dioxide than oil and gas... The argument for carbon neutral is that when a tree is cut, a new one will be planted and grow in it's place and absorb the extra CO2..Takes a long time for a tree to grow enough to absorb what was burned. It is unfortunate but the term Carbon Neutral is not much more than a marketing strategy term to make people feel good about slowing down climate change.... JMO

I think that a tree when burned will release about 50% of of the carbon that it absorbed over its lifetime due to the fact that half of its mass is in the root system which is still underground . So if you consider that it’s actually better than carbon neutral. More carbon neutral than an EV it could be argued considering the footprint of all the inputs to their manufacture.… JMOT . Now if you do plant another one to replace it, all the better. How many of the two Billion trees that were promised to be planted by our government are In the ground? 2.8 million.

Exactly... The burned tree releases 50% of the carbon it absorbed over it's lifetime. For argument sake, 1.4 million hectares of trees burned in BC alone last year.... All pretty much instantly releasing 50% of the carbon they took a lifetime to absorb. Now 1.4 million hectares of trees are gone and won't be absorbing any carbon, and even if new trees are planted the next day, ho long does a 12 inch sapling take to really absorb it's footprint of carbon? 10? 20? 30 years....? That's a lot of carbon released instantly into the atmosphere that will take 1.4 million hectares of trees somewhere else a lifetime to absorb, assuming they have the capacity to absorb 50% more than they normally would. Carbon Neutral = Catch Phrase. If we hear it repeated long enough, we will believe it's possible... JMO

Fact remains though that at least 95% of the carbon that makes up any plant is produced through photosynthesis. That carbon comes from the atmosphere. So , if half of the mass of a tree stays in the ground and the top half is burned less is going back into the atmosphere than came out of the atmosphere to produce the tree in the first place. Or so it would seem to my now sore head, lol . Oh , and all of the trees that burned this summer, half of their carbon content is still in the ground.

Good article. More or less confirmation of my theory....
