Yeah but the rails were cheap.
Back in the day I saw a whole bunch of brake rotors being scrapped in a container. Got to talking with the auto distributor and they said that truck brake drums (think of all the metal in them) were maybe 20% the cost of a car disc brake rotor. So depending on the application (read - what the market will bear) metal can be fairly inexpensive.
