it's difficult to change attitudes on things that are part of a culture. the 2 incidents that you mention elf reminds me of ron white's philosophy - you can't fix stupid. people like those two are just plain dumb - just too bad firearms are available to them. it seems to me though, the average american folks are looking at this in a whole new light. are people seeing lobbyists now for what they really are elf ? politicians, regardless of which country you live in, are always far too eager to pander to loud mouth special interest groups.

Maybe it's somewhat the same in Canada but here the politicians are legally bought and paid for by lobbyist to some degree .Anyone voted into congress is fixed for life and those who cheat and lie the most seem to get elected .We have two major political parties that treat everything like a baseball game .Our president 's biggest life achievement was to be a community organizer and the republicans was to nominate someone who could beat him .Nothing to do with leadership and betterment of the country .

There is one glimmer of hope for me ,I'm going to the Atlantic Nationals in Moncton next year .
 
Here's an example of how the relative difficulty in obtaining assault weapons makes our Canadian experience different....and I think better.

Two nights ago, a (probably crazy) guy stole a hearse and caused some property damage. Why a vehicle? He couldn't find an assault weapon....that's why....and nobody died.

Think about it.

Today, we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, "Common Sense", who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers;

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

Are we really going to get anywhere with this or is another mass shooting just around the corner........?

I'm starting to lose faith in the belief that the U.S. will solve this issue.

The icing on the cake for me lately is that the town of Nelson in Georgia has legislated that everyone must own a gun to fulfill their second amendment right and duty!!!!!!!!!!

....and "others may follow suit".

NRA's idea is to arm everyone.

WTF is this world coming to? --- (another rhetorical question).

..........feel free to add your own cynicism ....... and if there are any positive answers I'd like to hear them too. I don't see much 'positive' in what's going on today.

The only way I can really see everything being equal is if everyone has guns or no one has guns. If you are a criminal and know that everyone is packing a weapon, it may make you hesitate before doing something stupid... One big problem I see is alcohol and firearms or just basically emotions and firearms. If someone makes you mad, bam! Bar fight, bam! Road rage, bam!...but then again, if you know they can shoot back, maybe that would cool tempers?

It seems like if they get rid of guns in the States, everyone is worried that there is something out there just waiting to take over them and it's having guns that is keeping them safe.

This reminds me of Simpsons where the world finds peace so the aliens decide it's a good time to attack. Then Moe finds a board with a nail in it and chases the aliens back into space but the aliens aren't worried about it.

Kang: Did they? Right now they have a board with a nail in it. But they won't stop there. Soon they will make bigger boards with bigger nails until they make a board with a nail in it so big it will destroy them all!

If if starts that everyone has to have a gun, will it evolve to everyone having to have a semi-automatic, then having to have a full automatic?....and you better keep a grenade on you too!
 
Riley, humble apologies for resurrecting an old thread but it may be somewhat useful yet.
What I cannot do is close it in favour of my new thread. Would you do the honours please until I can do so.

I"d prefer it not disappear but be kept for reference -- so just a closure and not a deletion or murging.
