Samples of what's coming out of America in the last two days...

Maybe, just maybe, there's a flicker of hope.

The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun... is a good guy with a gun.
Just where does the NRA find these guys .

Funny thing that is getting little mention. The NRA is vehement about protecting the 2nd Amendment, but is ready to throw the 1st Amendment under the bus.

The U.S. Supreme Court has already afforded 1st Amendment protection (freedom of speech) to the publishers/manufacturers of violent video games....
"The Supreme Court today voided a 2005 California law that banned the sale of 'violent video games' to minors. A 7-2 majority of the Court found the law violated the First Amendment, affirming that free speech applies to digital content and new media as much as to traditional literature." SOURCE - Video games given full First Amendment protection by Supreme Court

Isn't it odd that the NRA so willingly blames violent video games and movies, already protected by the 1st Amendment, in order to protect their treasured 2nd Amendment?

Full disclosure here. I am conflicted about violent video games and movies and wonder about the long-term impact on all those young males sitting in their parents' basements killing hundreds of video game characters day after day, night after night. I think it's probably numbing their ability to empathize and I'd like to see controls put on the content - certainly on the ages permitted to purchase them.

Does that make me a control freak? Yes. Just like I believe in speed limits and after-11pm noise laws. If society does not control our behaviour than we'll have no society. In fact, isn't that entirely what society is all about - controlled behaviour? Americans are beginning to find that out. They blindly cling to the absolute letter of the 236-year-old Constitution / Bill of Rights, a document written by people who never even imagined airplanes, cars, TV, radio, telephones....or automatic assault weapons....but that fierce loyalty to the thoughts of 18th Century men may turn out to be hurting as much as helping in the 21st Century.

Let's imagine, for a moment, that no restrictions can ever be placed on weapons of any kind, nor on the most outrageously-violent games and movies. Care to think about where American society will be in 20 years? 30? 50? Almost incomprehensible, ain't it?

to me it's a tough call on video games, movies, song lyrics, or whatever. it makes me wonder how to draw the line between influence and bad taste. perhaps the kids today are stupider than we were, as in lacking common sense. as a little parody,in my day we knew damn well that the antics of the three stooges were hilarious but attempting them ourselves would result in a whole lot of real world hurtin'. also i think a little more responsible parenting and a little less of being a permissive buddy couldn't hurt.

Ever day now there is a murder suicide with multiple innocent victims .In my search for answers I looked at the state of Maine and statistics (my home state).Maine has some crime as there is everywhere in the world but I was surprised by what I found .Maine has the second largest inventory of privately owned guns .Also the second lowest murder rate by guns .Guns we're used in only 8.6% of all violet crimes .42% of gun murders we're drug or alcohol related of the 42% two thirds involved people from outside the state .When it referees to people from out of the state it mainly goes back to drug involvement from Massachusetts .If you look at the murder rate in 1960 (pop 970,000 ) vs 2011 (1.3 mill ) take the drug related shooting out the murder rate is significantly lower per 100,000 people .No murder has ever been committed with an assault weapon ..

Now it may seem that I'm justifying guns or I'm taking the stats from the NRA ,absolutely not .What I'd like to prevent any and all senseless killings particularly children killing children .

So I guess if ya want to come to the states your probably safest in Maine and it goes down hill from there .

Now I think Canada has some statistics also and probably pretty good ones .Yes you've got some pretty tough gun laws that your all satisfied with and that's good .I would have to assume that the drug problem isn't as bad as in the states .Your moral and religious standards might be some what higher . And having been raised by Canadians I personally feel a big factor is that you raise your children in a different standard all together .

Gun laws again in the states will not change that much ,most of congress both Republican and Democrats have close ties to the NRA .Any significant changes will be political suicide .

For people like myself it's a matter of survival in a gun society .

Keep your head down, Elf. This morning in Webster, NY (near Rochester) - 4 firefighters shot, 2 killed at Webster, N.Y., fire

"Police Chief Gerald Pickering said Spengler (the killer) had staked out a position with an arsenal of several firearms on a berm overlooking the scene."

I guess the NRA would want the firefighters to carry assault weapons so they could go into fire scenes with weapons blazing. It's getting more like a Hollyweird movie every day, no?

And on it goes....

I totally agree 67 , that's nuts .Why is it the shooter usually commits suicide and in this case the shooter was a convicted felon and killer .I can't imagine it was legal for him to own even a kitchen knife .Absolutely crazy .

I know in areas of California a police escort is sent with the fire dept .Of coarse California has plenty of wacko's.

when one hears the term " drug related crime " the first thought is crime related to the trafficking or obtaining of drugs. but i often wonder if alot of the insanity of mass shootings and such can be traced back to altered brain function due to previous drug use. i have seen people develop mental issues because of prior drug use.

No doubt in my mind that drugs are part of the puzzle and it started with my generation in the 60's.As far as I can find out all the shooters or their parents we're on prescribed drugs or illegal drugs .The laws need to crack down really hard on gun ownership by these people first .Like I said it's part of the puzzle .

The American Gun owners association, and the NRA, consider the deaths "sustainable losses" 310 million guns there now... The almighty dollar will win out.....watch...

Your all correct ,now the question is how do you protect yourself in a gun society .Both NY and Newtown shooting we're both Bushmaster assault weapons and in both circumstances the shooter had obtained the weapons illegally both shooters we're mentally unstable .

My prediction is that there will be massive civil unrest in the US within two years or less .You can feel the water starting to boil.I was hoping my wife would say something ridiculous like lets move to Costa Rica or Nevis .
.

Like what? Crazy people shooting crazy people? Crazy people are already shooting everyone else, so I guess picking each other off comes next?

:banghead:

encouraging news.

c.n.n. is reporting today on a program run by the city of los angeles where guns are turned in as exchange for grocery vouchers. evidently it is an annual event but this year the response has been tremendous. so far 8000 guns have been turned in and includes about 3 dozen assault weapons. encouraging news for our friends to the south.

You can call this stupid and I'm embarrassed it happened in my home state .Yesterday

A Doctor went to the restroom at LL Bean's and left his pistol on the counter (loaded). It was legal for him to carry because he had a permit .The big issue was what would have happened if a youngster had picked it up .The Doctor will loose his permit .(that's good)

Also yesterday a fellow was walking though Portland residential neighborhoods with an assault weapon (not loaded). When Police arrived in disbelief his explanation was it was his constitutional right .The police had to agree and let him go .

Just so everyone knows I read all your comments and opinions ,non are offensives at least to me .
