Really nice of him... Makes no secret it's to give them time to start abandoning operations in Canada and Mexico and move entire operations to the US. One more step in phucking your neighbours.I hear exemptions for auto sector announced seconds ago. Give it an hour, might change or whatever![]()
And…………GM stock is up over 7% today. I would think that after billions of dollars in cost and the time to relocate and get an assembly plant set up and operational that shithead should be long gone. We hope.Really nice of him... Makes no secret it's to give them time to start abandoning operations in Canada and Mexico and move entire operations to the US. Here's the release...
"U.S. President Donald Trump is giving the Big Three automakers a one-month exemption from sweeping tariffs he imposed on Canada and Mexico, the White House confirmed Wednesday.
![]()
The exemption came after Trump held a call earlier Wednesday with representatives of Stellantis, Ford and General Motors at the request of the companies, which rely on North American production lines enshrined in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
“We are going to give a one-month exemption on any autos coming through USMCA,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, reading from a statement she attributed to Trump.
“Reciprocal tariffs will still go into effect on April 2, but at the request of the companies associated with USMCA the president is giving them an exemption for one month so they are not at an economic disadvantage.”
Leavitt told reporters the reprieve was meant to give those companies time to shift investments to the U.S. Trump has repeatedly said he wants to boost the domestic auto manufacturing sector, using tariffs to move away from free trade routes.
“He told (the Big Three companies) they should get on it, start investing, start moving, shift production here to the United States of America where they will pay no tariff. That’s the ultimate goal,” she said.
Unknown, but that's German and Canada, so might make no difference. So, with all of this indecision and posturing, what do you guys think will happen to the plans for the new Volkswagon battery plant in St. Thomas, Ont.?
I can't see it moving ahead now with this clown at the helm in the US.
3,000 direct jobs and 10,000 indirect jobs are in serious jeopardy - and this is a singular project just breaking ground.
Buckle up kids - it's going to be a rough ride.
Head office is Germany but Volkswagens are made all over including Mexico, China, Slovakia, the United States, Brazil, Argentina, India, Spain, Poland, and Russia.Unknown, but that's German and Canada, so might make no difference.

Hi Ian, not trying to stir things up but..... Why is it that you place so much emphasis on being a Conservative? This emphasis on party affiliation hit me during the election, where all of Trumps faults could be laid out, but people vote because they were Republicans? I think of myself as a Canadian, and I vote for whoever believe will be best for the country. I don't think Poilievre is the best guy for the country.I don’t usually voice my opinion about political matters for the simple reason, it is a no-win situation. Some people may agree with you, it is guaranteed a lot of people will disagree with you, some very rudely.
Due to the severity and importance of the current events Canadian’s are forced to deal with, (a lot of American’s also, they just don’t realize it yet) I felt an urge to scribble a few words here.
Full disclosure, I am a conservative by nature. I personally do not like what Trudeau has done to our country over the last nine years. All the speeches I have heard Trudeau give over the years always started with “Canadians want me to do this” (paraphrasing here), then fill in the blanks, raise your taxes (luxury, capital gains, carbon), waste /give your money away etc. At the same time, he hits us with a massive current deficit, doubles our national debt, etc. etc.
Having said that I was impressed with what a Trudeau had to say today (I was around for his Father’s reign also). His speech on Trump’s tariffs was well done. It was on point, forceful and unequivocal about Canada’s response. This is the only time I have said this in 9 years “well done Justin”.
On the other hand, I was somewhat embarrassed with Poilievre’s speech. He tried to make this more a political attack on the Liberal’s and less a push back on Trump. There is a time and a place for everything Pierre, and this wasn’t the time for your diatribe on the Liberals. Unfortunately, I think PP is missing the mark on too many occasions because he is not connecting with Canadians, just check the current polls compared to a few months ago. Once again, I am a conservative, so I have a vested interest in his performance.
Aside from Smith, I think all the Premiers that spoke did a good job also. I hope that Trump, the bully, gets the message that Canadian’s aren’t the easy push overs he thought we might be.
I am very tempted to say the Trump is acting like a drunken sailor with too much power, but I am very reluctant to insult drunken sailors everywhere by placing Trump within their group. I think the world would be a safer place if Trump would just stick to running the oval office shopping channel selling bibles, coins, watches, sneakers, books etc.
I felt a little glimmer of hope when I watched CTV’s interview with the Governor of Kentucky. I hope the Democrats have him around to run for President in 4 years, because after 4 years of Trump I think it is a lock for the Dems to win the White House back, and it would be nice to have an intelligent, rational person, that likes Canadians, sitting at the Resolute desk again.
Anyway, that is my political statement for the decade. All the multitudes that disagree with me please feel free to take your shots now.
These opinions are all my own and I hope everyone has a nice evening.
Remember, Buy Canadian!!!
They have their fingers in a lot of pies …….

I still don't understand the impact. Will the buffoon put tariffs on cars made in the U.S.? This all makes no sense whatsoever. This is a piece taken from an article by the London Free Press:
The St. Thomas plant will supply Volkswagen with batteries for vehicles being manufactured at its plant in Tennessee making the ID.4 and in South Carolina making the Scout vehicle. As long as those are scheduled for assembly, the batteries are needed, Sweeney said.

"Good job Justin, you did Canada proud".Hi Dave
You are not stirring things up, you are asking a question and expressing an opinion. I have no problem with that.
My first post happened after watching Trudeau's speech and I was so impressed with it I thought it was deserving of a post here.
So the point I was attempting to make with my statement was that in spite of being a conservative, and I am sure I look at any political statement from any political party from that perspective. I believe you tend to be more critical of a party you don't support and more forgiving of a party you do support when it comes to statements and speeches. So my point was that I thought Trudeau gave the best speech of his career and Poilievre's speech was terrible. I agree with you, I also am not impressed with Poilievre and he may cost the conservatives the next election.
So thinking about it I guess I am also drawing attention to the difference between most Canadian's attitudes towards their chosen political party and how we are not afraid to criticize or applaud when appropriate, regardless of political leanings, and how the blind faith MAGA Trump supporters in the US believe that their Dear Leader has not, and could never do anything wrong or make mistakes.
So Dave, that was the point I was trying to make and I hope it is clearer now. It was really a "Good job Justin, you did Canada proud" post with a little bit more context of why I was so impressed,
Thank you for reading my original post and expressing your opinions, to me that is how thoughtful and respectful conversations occur.
I hope you have a great day.
Hi Ian. I agree with you, and its good to have a civil discussion. The US seems so entrenched in their identity politics. I am baffled at their Republican or die mantra. I fail to understand how anyone with even the smallest wit of common sense could have voted for the Orange T. I cannot even bear to listen to him. I'm just very thankful that we are Canadian and that he is not our leader. CheersHi Dave
