A Sucker Punch From Your Neighbour/Friend? (US/Canada Trade War)

Unfortunately there are many Canadians that still fail to see the Trump turd for what he is and what he is trying to accomplish and the world damage he is responsible for. Both the vocal Trump supporters and the silent ones in Canada share the same brain dead affliction. Here is AB we have more than our share of them. They identify as our 30% who think separating from Canada and becoming reliant on Trump is the answer. Sad state of affairs.
Reading your post (which I am in full agreement on) reminded me of a quotation from Tom Clancy, esteemed late author of political/action novels, which I think suits Trump, as well as Putin, Xin Ping and likely a few other so-called world leaders. Or, maybe it's just stupidity at least on Trump's part - entirely possible.

"War is the ultimate criminal act, an armed robbery writ large. And it’s always about greed. It’s always a nation that wants something another nation has. And you defeat that nation by recognizing what it wants and denying it to them."

Thomas Clancy, "Debt of Honor"

The latest madness from the Tariff of Nottingham .......this is regarding the new yet to be opened Windsor Detroit Bridge. Love the part about the Chinese terminating ALL ice hockey being played in Canada. What an absolute nutbar .View attachment 137013
The man is a joke. And unfortunately not a funny joke. The world will be a better place when someone plants him 6 feet in the ground. And it can't come soon enough.

That guy can lie easier than I can lie down.

Donald Corleone . He is nothing more than a two bit mobster as we are witnessing with his extortion attempt regarding the Gordie Howe Bridge. Hopefully he will end up sleeping with the fishes . Preferably under that bridge.... now that would be apropos.

Unfortunately our current PM won’t just ride this out and instead is pretending other markets that we aren’t prepared to ship to will replace a market that makes up 80%+ of our exports. What’s worse is people that support such nonsense. Smile, shake hands, cut deals, remember he’ll be gone in a short while, and throw up when you leave the room.

This “disengagement” is pure tomfoolery and short sighted nonsense as is anyone that supports it. IMO. YMMV.

I could care less which party the PM belongs to as long as he/she is doing the job to protect the welfare of Canadians.
In a perfect world and in hind sight years from now we can debate if his strategy is correct or not.
Trump blame fentanyl, Mexican crossing into USA because of our immigration system, our dairy monopoly etc... We try to addressed his concerns in the beginning but his action tells you other wise. He is just looking for the any excuses to implement his tarriff regardless. He is using economic weapon against Canada.
There were blunders along the way from Doug Ford that ruined the negotiation. Who knows how that would end up if he doesn't put up his ad?
I have more faith in our leadership than those that are in the WH to lead and to represent a country. And I do trust our leader to do the right thing in their judgment given the unexpected nightmarish circumstances.
We can bend over somemore and be the 51st or push back because we are Canadians and not Americans?
I trusted that most Canadians are educated enough to understand the economic pain that will follow and that we are better off having a good relationship with the US.
Bend over some more and beg, be the 51st?
IMHO. YMMV 🇨🇦

That's a pretty simplistic and self serving view for what a "just ride this out" would result in for Canada. Granted, our shipping to other markets ability is somewhat limited at this time but certainly exists as a partial buffer for what the US trade war is doing to ours and a multitude of other countries worldwide. It may be Manitoba's answer to smile and take it up the chute but will you have the same answer when we fall deep into recession? Just in case you aren't familiar with the term 'recession', Here's what you have to look forward to.

Decreased Economic Activity will result in a major drop in the GDP, which, in case you aren't aware, is the total economic output of a country.

Increased Unemployment. As economic activity declines, jobs are lost. MB already has a severe homeless situation and likely would like to avoid more.
A decrease in consumer spending is inevitable as people tend to save instead of spend. Especially if they have lost their jobs.

Businesses experiencing negative growth, reduced or loss profits, which also leads to job losses.

Recessions in themselves are a natural part of an economic cycle, but usually don't last long and the economy does recover. But if we "just ride this out" for three years or more, we would be in big trouble and who's to say that after Trump we don't end up with another billionaire turd with no respect for the rest of the world. Say goodbye to your RRSP's and other investments when the stock market crashes and say hello to widespread unemployment, hunger, homelessness and crime. Comparatively, the recession of the dirty 30's will look like a walk in the park and this is what Trump wants. This would be our new reality and an invitation for the spray tanned turd to make his final push for his 51st State.

As the US market that we are so dependent on has dropped by $40 billion (Jan. to Nov.) Carney's attempt to expand our exports and imports to other more friendly and reasonable markets is the only way that the upcoming recession in Canada can be buffered somewhat and keep Trump at bay. If you are not a Trump lover and aren't on the 51st state bandwagon, and know of a better way besides "just ride it out", let Wab Kinew know and maybe he will pass it on to the PM. .....YMMV... Strike that. You definitely have different views.

Well you’re a pleasant person. Patronize much?

Glad you’re happy with things. Carney promised a deal with Trump posthaste, and instead decided to be obstinate like you. Meanwhile every other country is taking care of business, instead of hooking an IV up to China for a chronic reliance on them. Perhaps you don’t understand the dangers of becoming reliant on China for our increasingly electronic world needs, especially when the USA is investing heavily in the same industries, for the exact reasons, and long term will always be a better partner than the Chinese communists. Great. More Chinese influence.

I remember Carney saying in the debate when asked, that CHINA is the greatest threat to our national security. Look it up. Now he’s blowing Xi. Lunacy.

Pray tell. Please enlighten us as to how you, if you were Prime Minister , would handle the situation that Canada and the majority of the developed world now find themselves in as a result of the American Administration's shift to protectionism and it's imposition of their tariff agenda. It's one thing to criticize yet another to criticize but offer possible solutions. At least Carney has yet to say that he admirers China's basic dictatorship. The " blame" for the situation we find ourselves in cannot be laid at any one doorstep. The root of it arguably goes back several decades through several different flavors of Canadian governments. We should have been developing our vast resources and diversifying our trade relationships many years ago . Complacency and relying on the status quo are a fools errand.

Strange how you’ve missed how all the other countries have struck deals with Trump already and Carney hasn’t moved the needle one bit. Why. INACTION. OBSTINACY. Trump likes to bang heads and cut deals. Carney doesn’t have the fortitude so he runs away, citing Mean orange man not nice to me…. I’m taking my ball home and not playing.

What if the democrats take the presidency in 2028? My bet is that they will. Back to square one.

ALL the other countries? A few perhaps. I'm pretty sure Carney is waiting until CUSMA runs out. I believe they are in talks already.

Those are quite the constructive solutions you are offering. Well done.

Trump said he loves Canadians according to one of the separatist PC Maple MAGA?
I expect a deal to be done soon from that sentiment without us giving up anything like moving all car production back to US etc...
Come to think of it. The Canadian goverments of all level has let me down all these years? My standard of living is not even close to what I had expected. If they would have governed the country properly, I would be living in a 4000+ sq. ft. home, 3 car garage, daily in a C8 ZR1 and 2022 Ford GT is my summer car. My blue collar wages should have been $400k. No more of than $10k of income tax. $.80 /L - 94 Octane. I can go on but you get the idea.
Hell, I am voting to join as the 51st and Maple MAGA as my party. Can't wait for the next election. Better put my name on the list on a ZORA with my standard of living to the moon as soon as PC take control..
Oh Say Can You See.. America 🇺🇸
