Has anyone done a road trip to the States and had parts installed? Like grilles, splitters and skirts? We're looking to head to upper NY state for a road trip and thought about ordering some parts in advance and finding a shop to do the work. Seems to me that parts in Canada are limited. Pretty new here so I'm not sure if this has been discussed here yet. And does it work financially with our exchange rate?
Just started researching a road trip to the Finger Lakes region.

Forecasts are for $.50 cents on the dollar in the not to distant future. My apologies for the hijack....

Wow. Breathing a sigh of relief as I’m paid in USD.... and spend 11 months a year in Asia.
Cant get home practically now anyway with this crazy virus. Leaving Indonesia to my house in Thailand tomorrow to hide out by the pool for a month. From there who knows. The screening and quarantine measures getting on and off the ship are intense. I got off her on the day it started.
Ok now really derailed here.
Be safe Amigos.

A warning flag has always waved for me on previous in-vehicle return border crossings south of the 49th.
I've never tested it after being asked pretty much every time ...
"Have you had any vehicle service or made modifications while on this trip?"
"Have you had to replace tires?" (which leads me to other thoughts)

What I now do is buy parts while in the USA and bring them back to install them on my own or by someone in Canada.
This means I might pay GST at the border but it avoids the question of whether improvements made, increases the value of the vehicle.
I've been lead to believe that the answer to that question is what might open a can of worms.
So I can add that when I bring parts back from the USA, any increased value that may come into play ... will not come into play.

Some people are good just to be tight-lipped when crossing the border ...
but I appear to have a "liar light" that flashes on my forehead.
My Mother and my Wife can clearly see it when flashing ...
and I take no chance that there might be a third person on earth who can also see it. :angelic:

I declare anything added to the car. Last trip back to Canada was rear tires. I also advised the agent that I did a home oil change in my garage and he said no problem but I did pay GST on the tires. They did use the actual conversion rate not the bank rates which are about 3 cents higher. Best to be safe and I don't want to risk loss of my NEXUS card for a few $ in GST.

I think you guys need to relax a bit, here in Ottawa, a ton of people go down to Ogdensburg, about 45 min drive down to pick up US items all the time. Some people declare, some people don't, while you can get punished, they aren't too overly detailed that they'd go through your e-mail or have you login to every CC you own. My last few sets of tires, I've since got a local guy who does all the importing and matches tirerack pricing and install to save me the day trip.

On the US side, a small UPS store has made a business of it from all the traffic. I personally grab parts all the time, you are good to declare up to $200 with a clean pass on a day trip, up to $800 for 48 hours. Per person.

Key things to do, don't lie about the time you have spent in the US, be honest to a degree about your trip (say you bought for personal reasons, not commercial), always declare something if that's what you told the us border guards and be consistent with your story to both US and Canada. The border is more concerned with illicit illegal crap, exploitation, illegal aliens, human trafficking etc than bothering your everyday citizen who wanted to save some cash on tires.

It'll need to be something unavailable in Canada, and or something extremely necessary.
Yesterday, I got my EZ Pass bill for the day I went state side to see the C8.
I paid online. Every US toll dollar cost me $1.41.

Parts used to be a bargain in the US. With the exchange plummeting the 40-50% savings has essentially all been wiped out. There still are some savings on certain parts but if the GST is factored in, plus gas and time, not much left over unfortunately.

Ya ... I was mainly talking about crap that may be "interpreted" to increase the value of the car. No panic just headsup.
Ya and I am lead to believe that the tire question is not really only about duty & gst. Again no panic.
Just up and up at the return border crossing ... not much to escape the savings when above the $1.40 exchange rate.

Thanks for the feedback folks.
As for the exchange rate, it's getting worse as we speak and that is wiping out any possible savings. We're always straight up at the border crossings and for 2 of us there is $1600 USD we can buy duty free so that's not too shabby.
For now I think I'll stay Canadian online if I can. A few smaller items then maybe an Aero package later on. I'll start with what I have and enjoy the ride. I peeled the airbag warning labels off and took it for a test drive. I put plate covers on and took it for a test drive. :)
And the electrical tape on the front brace. :Cheers2:
Took it for a test drive...

We don't hear much about the stats in Thighalnd but that might be because they don't know what is going on right now.

The stats are well known Richard. The health minister (deliberately non-capitallized) called all white guys "dirty" Idiot with a short career. This party town is empty now.

ACS Composites out of Montreal has, and ships everything you listed and I can vouch for the quality. Buy Canadian.

When i shopped there online they charged in US Dollars 🤣
I phoned to complain and they told me they take payment in Canadian over the phone.
Not sure if they changed that for online as i have not returned since.
