In Ontario, Loblaws Grocers own a chain of "Independent" Stores. Most of these have gas stations attached. I was surprised today to see that these stations have been sold to Mobil Oil. I think Mobil and Esso had historical connection but I do not ever recall seeing a Mobil Gas Station in Canada. The station has not yet been rebranded but the purchase was completed on July 17, 2017 according to the information on the pump.

You are correct Murray. Over the years, our engineering firm worked on some Mobil Oil interests projects here in Alberta. In 1999, Mobil and Exxon merged, and in 2012, Exxon/Mobil quietly acquired Imperial Oil over the years and by 2012 they found themselves owning about 70% of the company. The rest of the story is very convoluted as are many oil companies and their holdings. Imperial owns a pretty good chunk of the Alberta Oil Sands and a chunk of Syncrude as well.
But I doubt you will see any Mobil Oil Gas Stations in the near future in Canada. They have been quite regimented in preserving the Esso name for the gas stations in this country and being content with opening the many Mobil Lube facilities we are seeing pop up. There are a number of Mobil gas stations in California and a few around the Great Lakes area of the US but other that those and the Mobil gas name in Australia, the rest of the gasoline in pretty much retailed through the Esso name.

I have a very good childhood friend who just recently retired from a Chief Engineer Position with Exxon/Mobil so have heard lots about the company.... and not all good....lol....

Hey Rruuff,

I have a good buddy that is fairly high up at Imperial, and apparently this deal has just officially closed and the Mobil stations are a go in Canada.

Mobil brand of gas stations to launch in Canada after deal for 213 Loblaws-owned locations

This is an older article (from April this year), but it confirms what I was told by my friend. It looks like the Mobil name will arrive in Alberta and elsewhere across Canada in the near future. :Lurk5:

Very interesting bit of news guys, thanks for your input. I did notice that the electronic notification on the pump showed Mobil in their corporate logo so it will be interesting to see what happens next. One thing I have noticed is that a number of Esso stations in the north that have fallen into disrepair and closed. Wonder if there is a connection?

Several Esso stations in and around the Calgary region have also fallen into a state of severe disrepair and many have closed as well. Other prime locations however, have been renovated and had pumps replaced. Possibly downsizing the Esso brand with the Mobil stores coming onboard? They have also converted all of the remaining Esso "On the Run" convenience stores to "7-11" in our region. Not sure if that has happened elsewhere?

Yup Esso is pretty much a Station I always drive by in Calgary now.
Keeping a name that no longer works for Customers should be a no-brainer for it changing to Mobil.
I just might try it ... wonder what Oil they will offer ???
