Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this.

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1 : Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world doesn't care about your
self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6 : If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault , so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11 : Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

If you agree, pass it on.
If you don't agree stick your head in the sand and take a deep breath!

If you can read this ... thank a teacher!

If you can read this in English... thank a soldier!!!

Some very true points... Interesting perspective as we give children in schools the ability to read and write but yet they learn very few life skills and tools to use moving forward in careers and business etc...

Its sad how we have let our children and schools be watered down to the lowest common denominator...

I'm 32... and I was a bastard child... I fought a lot, I was picked on a lot... until I grew a foot taller than everyone else in the class... then i beat the ever living crap out of my previous bullies on a weekly basis... that experience taught me if you want something you have to fight for it.

The no touch policy was just coming into effect as I was going through... what a joke it is now. I was suspended/expelled from multiple schools.

This might sound far fetched but its all leading to a socialist government... they teach kids from a early age to run to mommy/teacher when something goes wrong... they grow up and expect their government to solve their problems... the complete opposite of John F Kennedy's famous speech.

We are raising a generation of pussies that comment on home renovation shows run by bum blasters.

Wait a minute! Where did you say I could find the bum blasters?:D

On a side note...or I should say more relevant to the topic, there should be a happy medium. Kids should not be placed in a cocoon but they should not be left to starve either.

If they fail, hold them back, find out why, see if they can be helped. Society has advanced to the point where a person needs to meet a minimum standard to be successful. Yes, there are some that did it on their own, but that is more of an exception than the rule and who knows where thy would be if they went through school. And don't get me wrong, I don't mean University as a minimum, but just the basics of math, language, social interaction so that you can choose a future course being University or a Trade.

Then again, who says the rules can't change as kids develop such as starting off with a whole bunch of rules and being carefully watched and gradually easing back to the point where they are left to starve by the time they leave high school.

Just my opinion and thought.

^^cant agree more^^
We should and I do teach my our kids that there is usually a logical thought process to solve most of the problems they face in life and in education. Whatever life deals you do your best, follow your dreams. And in fear of quoting in cliche, the reward of hard work and dedication seldom go unrealized!
