Mushroom season in Alberta. Picked these while walking the dogs yesterday in my pasture. Parasol mushrooms. Been harvesting them for years now and put about 40 bags a year in the freezer....

How did you decide they were edible?
We've got dozens of varieties of mushrooms in our yard, but would I even try to eat them?

You were smart not to eat them. Many of the red top fungi are very toxic. I pick and eat several types of mushroom but it took a lot of research to be positive that they were not poisonous

research and more research... I have a very good book that explains how to tell what they are...Google will help too. The parasols are easy. Not much else even looks like them and they have some specific tells for identification. Morels, shaggy mane and the parasols are among my favorites that i find.

That's why I wouldn't risk it not that I would eat Amanita Muscaria , a bit heavy duty from what I understand. These are the ones we picked every fall years ago on the East Coast. We had some growing in our backyard. They got the job done , lol.

After all the fires over the last while the Morels are popping like crazy here . We get lots of people from all over coming every year to pick . That many that bulk buyers even set up around the burn areas to buy from the pickers . Pretty good money involved. Those are beauties in the above pic .

They are Liberty Caps (psilocybe semilanceata). They are illegal in Canada but people pick them all the time. Dried, they fetch upwards of $500.00 for 100 grams.

Psychoactive Properties

Liberty Caps contain psilocybin, psilocin, and baeocystin, with psilocybin concentrations ranging from 1.0% to 1.8% of dry weight, making them among the most potent naturally occurring psilocybin mushrooms.
.Psilocybin is a prodrug converted to psilocin in the body, producing psychoactive effects that are often described as cerebral, fast-paced, and electric
