The LT6 and LT7 were designed simultaneously. Not sequentially — simultaneously. Chevrolet calls the architecture "Gemini" because both engines were always intended to exist as twins: one naturally aspirated, one turbocharged, sharing a common block but optimized for completely different missions. The Z06's LT6 makes 670 HP naturally aspirated at 8,600 RPM — the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever produced. The ZR1's LT7 makes 1,064 HP twin-turbocharged at 7,000 RPM — the most powerful V8 any American auto manufacturer has ever installed in a production car. Same block casting. Same bore spacing. Same flat-plane crankshaft concept. Different everything else. Chevrolet didn't build the LT7 by bolting turbos onto the LT6. They built both engines from one architectural blueprint with two divergent paths. The naturally aspirated path was always the warm-up act.

The flat-plane crank at 5.5 liters is the engineering achievement that defines both engines. Ford's SAE documentation said flat-plane cranks above 4.6 liters create vibration problems that may be unsolvable. The Voodoo's 5.2 liters nearly didn't make production. Chevrolet went to 5.5 liters — 300 cc larger than the Voodoo — and then added turbochargers that multiply cylinder pressures and torsional loads beyond anything a naturally aspirated engine experiences. Bore: 4.104 inches. Stroke: 3.150 inches. Compression: 9.8:1 — lower than the LT6's 12.5:1 because the turbochargers provide the cylinder pressure that compression provides in a naturally aspirated engine. The reduced compression gives the combustion chamber headroom before detonation at 24 psi of boost on E85 fuel. Redline: 8,000 RPM. 800 lb-ft of torque is available from 3,000 RPM — meaning the driver has four-digit horsepower and near-peak torque across a 5,000-RPM operating window.

The turbochargers use MAR-M246 alloy turbine wheels — a nickel-based superalloy rated to 1,900 degrees Fahrenheit that is more heat-resistant than the Inconel typically used in high-performance turbocharger applications. At 24 psi of boost, the turbochargers move so much exhaust gas through the turbine housing that the quad exhaust outlets generate 37 pounds of measurable aerodynamic thrust. The exhaust isn't just noise. It's propulsion. Chief engineer Dustin Gardner described the dyno testing: twelve-foot exhaust pipes glowing red from the test cell to the wall. Cracked emissions handling stacks. One engine that "freed itself from the shackles of the dyno" — engineer-speak for tearing itself off the dynamometer mounting. Chevrolet had to redesign the standard dyno attachment to handle the LT7's output because the existing setup couldn't contain 1,064 HP.

The LT7 uses a seven-stage dry-sump oiling system with eight-quart capacity and oil-spray piston cooling — jets of oil hitting the underside of each piston to remove heat from the combustion chamber through the piston crown. Cylinder heads: A356 T6 aluminum with CNC-machined combustion chambers, intake ports, and exhaust ports specific to the LT7 — not shared with the LT6. Titanium intake valves at 1.77 inches. Sodium-filled Nimonic exhaust valves at 1.37 inches — Nimonic is a nickel-chromium superalloy that maintains its mechanical properties at temperatures where conventional steel valves would soften and fail. Mechanical finger-follower valvetrain with dual-coil valve springs. Direct injection at 5,076 psi maximum fuel pressure with a supplementary port injection system that activates at wide-open throttle to provide the additional fuel volume the direct injectors alone cannot supply at full boost. The most powerful American production V8 ever built sits behind the driver in a car with a split rear window — a design detail that traces back to the 1963 Sting Ray. The most advanced Corvette engine ever made wears the styling detail of the most beautiful Corvette ever designed. Sixty-two years apart. Same window. Different horsepower. One thousand sixty-four of it.
