GM vehicles first came with electronic ignition in the early 1960s. Delco Remy developed a transistorized ignition system in 1962, which was introduced as an option on Pontiac vehicles in 1963 and on Corvettes in 1964 under the option code K66. However, electronic ignition became more widespread and standard on GM vehicles starting in 1975 with the introduction of the High Energy Ignition (HEI) system.
Chrysler vehicles first came with electronic ignition in 1972. This was a significant innovation that replaced traditional breaker points with solid-state electronic components, enhancing reliability and efficiency.
Ya , I don’t know a lot about exactly what vehicle came with what from memory but I do recall that there were as you point out aftermarket kits before the factory started widely using them. Certainly made a big difference and probably better gas mileage but that was when there was still lead in gasoline , lol. The dual point ignition was a real pain to set up. I bought the car brand new, but once I started tinkering all hell broke loose! I had been thinking about doing the same for the engine in my 64 Bonneville and still haven’t gotten around to it. Mind you I’ve only had the vehicle for 25 years……it runs pretty well just getting the timing and dwell right with fresh points, new cap and rotor. And wires and plugs and coil …you know the drill. Had to do it in spurts back then due to budget but lots of fun nonetheless.The dual point ignition was a real pain to set up.
