Just got my plate renewal notice so I went and got off the SAAQ website. You're lucky not to live in Quebec. We ALSO have luxury tax to pay over the federal one on our license plates every year until the car is 7 years old or below $40k value. That is over the large engine surcharge when you buy the car and also when you plate it on subsequent years . My 2025 will cost me near $1000 to plate it this year.
Frustrating when I know Ontario have FREE plates and have much nicer roads.
Nothing like a money grab in the name (insert your own reason) of climate change,
My NOX and Vette both cost $133 for the plate plus the insurance contribution, $66.16 and admin fee of $5.20. No extra charges on the NOX. The Vette is now old enough so no more "luxury" tax. However, because it is a large capacity engine, 6.2L, I get dinged with and extra $331. Anything 4L engine size and above get an added registration fee. I'm waiting for some office smart ass to figure out that as engines "wear" a little the engine size increases, albeit very slightly. They could add a few extra nickels on the extra cost.
Now if you think that is bad you should see how motorcycles get dinged. You could be paying up to close to $2K per year to plate your two wheeler depending on a number of factors such as rated sport bike rating.
I store the Vette for the winter so only running it for six months. This halves the registration fee. Plus private insurance is less as well.
When i got my first drivers license it was for MC only. Got my car drivers license after and took the test with a friends stick shift. This automatically gave me the truck/bus permit as well. You basically held one permit for all types of motorized vehicles when you had the truck permit. Now, another money grab, everything is separated out. So you have a car permit, extra for a motorcycle permit and extra for truck permit. Anything to get your money from your pocket to theirs.
