Tell us what you really think Eric!
It's an interesting theory to think that they're bringing up the performance of the Camaro so it can 'replace' the Corvette or give people an option for something with performance at an 'affordable' price. However, I think Eric summed up it quite thoroughly that even if the Camaro ZL1 can rip along side the Corvette, it won't produce the same feeling people get in a Corvette, who want a Corvette. And I'm sure the same goes the other way. I love the Camaro but it is a hammer, whereas the Corvette is a scalpel. You could use either tool to see inside an orange, they just both get you there a little differently. Very simply put, Camaro = pony car. Corvette = sportscar.
This doesn't mean the Camaro is bad, it's just simply the history of it. A different design for a different automotive segment.
I doubt that GM is increasing the performance of the Camaro in hopes that it'll replace the Corvette. A couple reasons are. Look at the competition. Last time I looked, the Mustang outsold the Camaro. GM isn't thinking that second place is great! They want to be number one in that segment and they'll only get there if they keep improving the car.
Secondly, still looking at the direct competition. There is the amazing GT350, a 707 hp Challenger, 840 hp Demon, and rest assured a GT500 in the near future. Camaro is simply keeping up with what others are offering in the class.
Lastly, the beauty of the Corvette is that it is a performance car that competes with the best in the world and it is actually affordable to working class people. I'm sure this concept was not lost on Zora Duntov. I'm sure he'd hate the idea that his dream car is so out of reach that no one can afford the Corvette anymore and the people who could have gotten one, are forced to look elsewhere.
So that is my take on the situation. The mid engine Corvette most likely will cost more than most can afford but I don't think they'll leave us hanging.
