Never thought I would brag about this!

An add on to my earlier post. Last year on a 60 mile stretch at exactly 60 mph (97kmh) with cruise on and using 94 octane Chevron I got 38.5 mpg. Just came back from doing the same trip to the same coastline. But this time I used 91 octane and had cruise set at 60 mph again. The reset was done to zero at start but through that whole 60 mile stretch the best I could get is 30 mpg. The mileage on the vette was only 3,000 kms more than on last years trip. Ninety four octane will usually give more mpg but the difference was just too much to believe. A little puzzling...???

Al -- as much as we rely on the average mpg's in our cars I find that they're not as accurate as doing it the old fashioned way of filling to the top, driving a distance (the further the better) refilling and dividing the gallons/liters by the distance travelled.
I don't think the car's computer is very accurate -- there's just too many variables that will affect mileage.

It'll take you longer and the conditions may not be exact for both scenarios but try the long way -- I think you'll find it a little more accurate.
The hardest part is filling to the top. It can take a little while to do so.

Cheers,
Colin.
