a man that i worked with, ed kular, along with his companion was just brutally murdered in mexico. eddie was a kind hearted wonderful guy. this is just too horrible to imagine what they must have gone through. i feel for ed's family, i worked with his son steve as well. this is just the most recent in a series of violent crimes on canadian victims. i think if i were planning a trip i would steer clear of mexico.

Even when travelling in the U.S., you had better know where you are going. I worked with a guy who was a downtown Toronto cop for quite a few years, and he said that there are areas in Toronto as bad as anything in the U.S. I know two other police officers who worked Toronto undercover and they will tell you the same thing. Canadians are not used to keeping their eyes open and alert as to what is going on around them. Sadly, we have to wake up to reality.

Truly sorry ,I use to vacation in Mexico with the family and no more .we do have issues growing in the US and you have to be alert.i don't ever remember an attack on a tourist in Maine bit who would want to go from cold Canada to cold Maine

Wow, Doug, so sorry to hear of the loss of your friend. That's just horrible!

I've been saying the same thing now for years, that I won't go near Mexico.

So many incidents there....just not worth the risk.

Condolences to Mr. Kular's family and friends. Very sad.:(

That is unbelievable to hear! I've heard of only a couple other deaths of tourists in Mexico but it was with younger people who went off the beaten path in search of partying. This is the first I heard with someone who definitively does not fit that image....

What horrible news. I'm very sorry to hear of this Doug. I wish you as well as their family the absolute best wishes during this confusing and difficult time. :(

that is so sad. Sorry for the loss of your friend.

People keep telling me to vacation in Mexico but I haven't been further then Tijuana. Some days I want to go to places.... but just haven't and not sure if I will.

Sorry to hear about this news. May I ask what part of Mexico they were traveling in?

Either way, this is really crappy, and wish that government would get their act together in the war against the cartels. It's tough though, one side has a lot more money than the other. A very difficult problem facing this country which is otherwise so beautiful and charismatic.

This doesn't come to me at a good time! We have spent considerable time deciding on a resort. We have chosen one in Ixtapa Mexico----booking flight tomorrow morning! Four of us, not a good feeling.

Bob, we went to Ixtapa for many years (Las Brisas, we have stayed at a number of resorts there and just love this one) it is a beautiful spot and I don't think you will have any issues there.

Enjoy the sun and warmth after an Owen Sound winter you need it. Make sure you get into the the food market and shops in downtown Z, take a cab and ask him to take the scenic route over the mountain and along the ocean side. Just use common sense about where and when you go outside the resort. I never felt uncomfortable there and if I could I would go tomorrow.

Have a great time.

Really saddened to hear about it on the news, and my condolences to you since you knew him. But just to clarify, they were not tourists, they were retired seniors living in a home down there in Ajijic. According to recent news, one person was arrested and the robbery was over a wide-screen TV the couple just bought. Really sad.

so sorry about your friend Doug, I heard they had taken friends to the airport and were attacked when they surprised some
home invaders on their return, apparently that's what authorities think

i think folks that travel take too much for granted in regard to personal safety. not just in violent crime, but in many other aspects. i was in san juan P.R. when the dupont plaza hotel/casino burned in dec. 86, it was an eye opener, 98 dead. we were damn near in it, we decided that we weren't properly dressed and decided to come back later. 20 minutes later - up it went. for me it was a tragic lesson that standard codes and procedures that we are used to, don't always apply elsewhere.
