Methanol Injection:50/50 or 100%??????

Good morning Manny,

Somehow my days are always better when they start with a walk and then Manny answering one of my multitude of questions.

I always believed that there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers. Thus I appreciate your patience in answering what must seem like an unending list of thoughts that cross my mind from day to day.

Plus I do believe that knowledge is power. Maybe most folks were already aware that AFR vary from vehicle to vehicle, tune to tune. I had to idea and when I don't know something I ask someone. Now I know and my rule for living has been met for today.........

"Learn something new everyday otherwise the day has been wasted".

As well another thought that I often have is that it is probably that I am not the only one who is wondering about some questions I post but maybe others might be too embarassed to ask for fear of looking like or made to feel like an idiot by other posters. Pride and I parted ways long ago and figure I'd rather ask and learn than to remain silent and ignorant.

I mean I've gone from the big zippo to maybe 5% knowledge this year so I'm feeling pretty happy with myself actually.

Differences of opinion, with things like gauges, help me to make as informed an opinion as possible. Often there are different perspectives that people bring to the table and as long as we remain civil and respectful this will not turn into , well, say a forum from more southern locals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers,

Garry

Let me rephrase it then , For the average guy , they have no meaing , since most do not understand what they are reading . Just pretty lights .

I have yet to install a gauge pack for anyone that was able to really say they were looking for or at . So for the most part my first statement was correct .

You are 100% correct on this one. If they have no meaning, they are useless. I guess I assumed that someone that modifies their car to this extend has more basic undertanding.

Amazing new shop by the way.

Good morning Canuk, Manny,

Hey nice to see you have a sense of humor Canuk, cute pictures!

Maybe you could program in a set of guidelines for the alarms to be sensitive to go off at. I might not be aware of what the problem might be but it sure would be nice to know that I am in a danger area. Sort of like I was mentioning before about idiot lights. I don't need to have the oil presure reach 5 psi to see a light coming on. If it is always rock steady at 50 psi and suddenly starts to read lower I'd like to be aware of that. While I might not ever tackle a forged engine with this car I'd also rather not have to face finding a replacement for it either as we know what tracking down a LS7 can be like. I like to think that I am a teachable sort of guy and knowing good numbers from bad would be useful..............

Canuk, any idea what caused the cats to fall apart like that????? I grew up in Kirkland on the West island in the mid-70's, really enjoyed living there a lot. Went to school in Beaconsfield..........

Manny, does the range of AFR vary from car to car or is is constant? I remember Juan with his FD telling me that the range for him was 12 to 15%...........

I should be able to send you the proper number this morning as well to correct the other issue, I called for it last night but the owner was in bed.

Cheers,

Garry

Kirkland is right around the corner. Great area to grow up in.

I think the stock cats dont take to boost very well, and they just broke apart, but Manny is more qualified to know if thats accurate or not. Good luck with your build. Sounds sweet.

Good afternoon Canuk,

I know it may sound silly but did you ever think of using the name "Carnuk"??!!

For me this is a huge learning process. I mean I understand forced induction and why and how from learning about turbochargers on the combine. But watching air/fuel ratios and running lean and rich and knock are things that I am sort of picking up on the go. Do I want my car to go faster, yep. Do I have all, many or some of the answers, nope. Somethings I have no problem admitting that I am not themost knowledgeable about. So I hunt for someone I can trust.

Believe me, after divorce trust with anything does not come easy for me. For example, after discussing the project with Manny and the SC and header, Manny pipes up with the menthanol injection. As I mentioned on another thread, I had heard of it before, even had a friend in highschool who had water injection in his truck and he was a bit of a wrenchhead and explained it to me. I had heard of it being done to airplane engines. But not so much cars. But Manny explained it to me until I understood it, why and how and that got added to the build list as well thanks to my gf and parents. But more technicial things things might be much for me to absorb. But I do enjoy watching needles move and gauges so that is why I asked about those. Plus with time, perhaps one or two things at a time, I can learn about what the readouts refer to and what they mean. It is a case that if it might be something that I would find useful down the road based on other's experiences I'd rather get Manny to look into it now.

You can read the Vararam thread to know how successful sometimes some of my mechanical adventures can be!

Manny hasn't mentioned anything to me yet about cat issues yet that I could encounter from the build. Maybe Z06 are different from Z51 but then again it looks like we'll be in the same power range at the end so I'll have to be aware of this. And thus where having a boost gauge might be handy.

See how my thought processes go!

I enjoyed Kirkland a lot. Went to Beaconsfield High School. Useless trivia, we lived at 124 Kirkland Blvd. After my friend Chris moved from 126 Kirkland Blvd guess who moved in? Not sure if you're a hockey fan but it was Mario Trembley! I wasn't a hockey fan but it is still a neat footnote in my life. His wife Collette sure was pretty as I recall........

Cheers,

Garry

Believe me, once you start on this path, you will want to know more and more. It will just come with reading forums and talking with Manny. I never had the pleasure of meeting him. I considered using him, and spoke to him about doing my build but it was just too far and a more convenient plan came up. From everything I have heard you are in great hands with him. From what I understand he works closely with the shop that did my build and there are bright car minds involved there.

Good morning Canuk,

Well, knowledge is power as they say.

It's just have 2:30 am local time and I can't sleep. I'm not sure why but I think it is from being so excited about the car finally arriving. Everything in stages. Getting the car from home to Edmonton, the car travelleing from Edmonton to Breslau and now it arriving and the project can begin.

There were a number of shops in the province that I could have probably used but the economy here works against you. Not everyone is an oilfield worker or in the oilfield service industry but as they can charge these people whatever rate they want and often they'll pay it everyone else is expected to do the same. Buying a house or a vehicle in Alberta in the past was a real challenge if you wanted to do any negotiating!

Sadly after getting the vehicle shipped 1/2 way across the country I still ended up getting better equipment for a lower cost when I talked with people in Edmonton and Calgary.

This speaks volumes for the deals people are getting in Ontario but also for the b*** f****** that we're getting out here.

I think you're right as well. I will want to become more than passingly knowledgeable about the engine. But then again also why I might want to have some gauges to give me more information. I hear about people advancing timing until they start to hear it ping and even rode with people who did this and never heard anything myself. Too many years of operating farm equipment without ear protection has damaged my hearing. Or listening to loud music as a kid perhaps. Most likely both!

Cheers,

Garry
