London Ontario, Lambeth Legion:
Corvettes of Western Ontario held their first ever, annual "Crown Corvettes" event this past Sunday, August 14th (see three photos attached to this thread). As with any "new" show, there is always concern about adequate attendance in the first few years until the show has developed a regular following and gained traction.
Mother nature was good to us, blessing us with milder temperatures, a slight breeze, and partially overcast skies. We had 140 Corvettes come out - a spectacular first showing! We had cars from the Capitol City Corvette Club in Lansing Michigan, cars from Collingwood, Toronto, Hamilton, Waterloo, Sarnia, Windsor and all points in between. We placed the American flag below our own, to welcome our American visitors. We had 80 cars on the grass with some having tree shade, and we had another 60 cars on pavement (at their request). I am a 'parking on grass' guy, but it turns out not everyone sees it that way.
Our guests enjoyed an all you can eat breakfast put on by the Legion Ladies from 8 am till 10 am. for $7.50. We had more folks partaking in this breakfast than planned (some neighbourhood people, spectators, and vendors) and we ran out of food at 9:45 am. Our apologies...that won't happen next year. We had 90 door prizes, and ran a 50/50 draw that was up around $500 for the winner.
We had three young people pick their favorite car from each of the 7 generations and an overall "Car of the Show". This was not based on any technical parameters, but was more fun and flexible with winners being chosen based on what "caught the eye" of these young people.
The Legion Ladies fired up the BBQ at 11 am and served up burgers, dawgs, sausages, and fries till 1 pm...not to mention the Legion bar opened up at 11 am, and folks were able to sit on the Legion's licenced patio in the shade of an awning, enjoying their burger, fries, and beer while viewing the sea of Corvettes parked on the grass. The music departed from the traditional 50's theme, and John Charno, the Legion DJ, played great rock from the late 60's and early 70's. It was awesome!
Proceeds from food and bar sales went to the Legion's veterans. The Corvettes of Western Ontario would like to thank everyone who cruised over to London to support our show. We would also like to thank the Lambeth Legion for their wonderful venue - we have cemented a great win-win partnership! We hit a homer out of the park! We expect our numbers to increase each year, and are already concerned we may have to cap our event at 200 or 225 cars just a couple years down the road. Stay tuned.
