Hey....looking for some advise on changing the pinion seal on the diff in my 1980. Diff is original and untouched, I already have it out of the car. So, can I count the treads of the pinion that are exposed and the number of turns to remove the pinion nut as a guide to re-installing the pinion nut the same way after I replace the seal? Will this get me my preload close to what it was before disassembly ?...

Been a lot of years since I had anything to do with diffy pinion seals but original setting is a good place to start. Found out from bad experience that it takes a fair amount to start the crush sleeve but once started, takes 2/3 of sfa to crush it too much.... Good luck and maybe @turbozig @Jr. Corvette @taylorsk8 or one of the other expert C3 ers will chime in...

Appreciate the heads up...gonna hunt around some more before I pulls the pinion nut off, diff is otherwise perfect just the leak....
