I have an 81 corvette and I cannot get the horn mech. and shims on without binding on the telescopi

My apologies to everyone, this has been very frustrating for me but i think we found the problem the wedge in the column has somehow slipped out of position trying to get it back in proper location.
Thanks to Black 03, and Rruuff,Dav. for all your assistance.
Again sorry gents

No problem Mich, I hope you have found the cure.

Let us know, we will be awaiting a positive outcome.

Unfortunately Mitch, none of us watched you take it apart or try to put it back together. It is fairly obvious you are not doing something right and also fairly obvious that, as Black03 said, there has to be a simple, but also possibly hidden answer. You've been asked a couple times if you have a manual. I would assume if you don't, you have at least surfed every Google hit and image on the subject by now. Just out of curiosity, I found several very detailed exploded views of your column and some very good disassembly/reassembly directions. There appears to be more than one little trick you have to follow for proper assembly. Maybe you have already read every answer out there but just in case, here's what I thought was one of the better how-to's. Good Luck.

Thanks Rruff Day for the link! I had the scare of a life time when driving my newly purchased 73. I tried to adjust the tele and the steering wheel popped right off the column. There I was, in a moving Vette with a steering wheel in my hands not connected to anything. Strange feeling to say the least. Funny thinking back now that in panic mode, I actually tried steering. I am very, very fortunate that I was going down my driveway and not on the highway.... I've since tried searching all the different diagrams I could find but couldn't see how the top steering wheel shaft stayed connected to the rest of the column. This link cleared it up for me. Once the replacement and missing parts come in, I should get it back together again with no problem.

Hey Fred. No problem. Glad that it helped you out and really glad you were in your driveway when it came apart. Totally understand the panic mode. Any one of us would have been panicked in that situation. Helll. I panic when my ballpoint pen comes unscrewed...lol...
And welcome to the forum. Lots of good people and good information here.

Eric
