A couple months ago my 1979 Vette would turn over, but not fire up. A fellow corvette buddy told me to take the distributor cap off, clean it up and put back on. It fired right up. Didn’t have an issue after that until the last little while as it’s been doing it very often. I took it back off cleaned it up, tightened up some connections I thought were a bit loose and also pulled up the prong on the rotar a bit, put it all back together. It fired right up the last couple days, then it started again. Any thoughts on maybe changing the distributor cap and rotar?

This may sound like a shot in the dark but I will ask first. Di you have a remote start on your Vette?

Do you see any evidence of arching inside the caps . Fine black lines . Moisture in the cap can sometimes cause the same symptoms. Or perhaps a cracked cap ? Like Murray said, cap and rotor aren't very expensive.

It fired right up this morning. I’m going to leave it until spring, then see what happens when I pull it out of storage.

Could be aftermarket. They always have a normally closed hood switch so the vehicle can't be started remotely while you are changing the fan belt , lol. He says it's not connected anyway.....
